Trump rarely builds anything. He licenses the Trump name to developers that carry most of the burden of financing and constructing Trump branded towers. Most of the developers he works with are Asians who would build in LA and the West Coast anyway if they had enough confidence in the market. Additionally, since Trump's buildings are associated with Eurocentric, over-the-top nouveau-riche excess, the West Coast is a bad fit for the brand.

^ Who cares.

Anyway, the Wilshire Grand closes for good on Friday so we are nearing the start of the long road for these two towers.

I'm hoping that this project is realized.

The U.S. Bank Tower is the tallest building in Los Angeles for over 20 years, Hollywood needs another supertall even higher.

Not to start a flame war or anything, but I've always thought of the West Coast as being exactly over-the-top nouveau-riche excess. Kind of figures that it would be, what with New York, Boston, and D.C. being much, much older cities than any on the West Coast. Of course there is some fantastic and awful architecture of all kinds on both coasts.

All that having been said, I really do wish they'd do something different. I'm not head-over-hills for the BoA tower in NY, and I definitely don't care to see another similar tower in LA.

Operative term: "Eurocentric", meaning that Trump's vision of Luxe is some kind of nasty cheezoid Versailles trip with gaudy gold plated filigree. West Coast nouveau riche types go for a cleaner, more modern approach. Exceptions abound on both coasts, of course.

I really like these two towers but I agree that the design is quickly growing stale. Although given the neighboring towers, for LA it's a breath of fresh air...

Hollywood doesn't have a supertall.

Man, that was a way of speaking. I was referring to Los Angeles (film industry).

What would this development be like if its condo component were scrapped?

It's just good to see construction in the city again.

I'd love to glance at the skyline and see the tower go up a few floors each day en route to work. And this won't be the only project under production this year! The marriot companion will also be built in the near future. I can hardly wait =]

I really hope this only marks the starting point of a skyscraper construction boom for L.A. Of all the cities in which more luxury residential towers would seem to fit best, this city's basically at the top of the list (nevermind the benefits to density and thus public transit). And on that note, is there anything new in the "Hollywood Corridor" planning proposal that's interesting?
