Of course that's a much better pic than the one I took from the ground! I'm curious about the spire-how prominent will it be? In the renderings it seems to be lost in a shadt of light and seems very small. Buy hard to tell, but I'm hoping for Capitol Records building prominence!
if i understood it correctly, the spire will have LED lights on it, embedded or attached, is (to me) is unknown, i am certain that it will not have the mass of Capitol records, but i am speculating a 1' to 2' diameter pole, with light boxes partially embedded, one thing i would like to see is some sort of beacon, like the Lindbergh beacon on the City Hall,

As for the spire being a cheat for height, the first building in the world to surpass the 1000' level, did so with a spire, the Chrysler building in New York city, i am disturbed if the spire is an after thought, but not if it was intended to be a feature of the building in conception,

After all, some spires such as in the Chrysler building or the Nordstrom tower add to the design. In this one I'm not so sure but the crown will look fantastic, judging by how good the building looks already.

I can't picture NYC skyline without its spires, they really add a lot to its majesty imo. As far as official height who cares? I love spires if done nicely.

That is the spire that was an integral part of the towers design minus the antenna. I like spires as long as they're not a pole stuck on the top of flat roofed buildings. Just my opinion and taste, which means nothing really. I'm not well educated in these matters, I just like what's pleasing to my eye.

It isn't a spire because it has mechanical floors and an observation deck at the top.

I'm sorry for asking. I never really followed plan or consrtuction of this tower, I nearly even forgot LA was getting a new shiny supertall in the downtown core. But what is the middle piece with the differend cladding?

Yes, this is true, but the original first draft design, did not include the "spire"shown in this wonderful photograph, actually it was intended to be a dirigible mooring mast, which idea was abandoned after a single attempt to dock to it, (wind of course) i've always wondered what the suspended system of walkways would have looked like, for boarding passingers, not only that, were are floors 91 to 101, only stairwell landings in this case, with a single elevator shaft inside, the 90th floor mechanical penthouse for the lower building is enclosed in the "spire" base, i find "crown"more appropriate in this case,

As for the glass feature on wilshire grand, to emphisize the earthquake outrigger bracing behind it, there are 2 more levels of this bracing about 20 floors above this, and another at the roof, the level between this and the roof is a different type of bracing, and not visable at the building perimeter, at the roof, the bracing will be backlit with interior lighting, as well as the "crown"and "spire"above,

I believe it's the new upcoming megatall project for LA. Metropolis Tower with an impressive height of 1811ft divided by 4 towers xD
