Parts of Chicago (like the area around the Willis Tower) suffer from the same problem to be honest, but New York contrasts with these 2. That's why most people enjoy it so. It's a fun place to walk: I've walked from Mid-town to the Battery and found every foot interesting because it's almost a continuous series of shops, restaurants, banks, whatever, and almost no curb cuts for garage entrances or surface parking lots. To be fair, other parts of downtown Chicago are much like this too but I wish all of it were, and LA.
The skyscraper "boom" in DTLA right now is a product of densification. Downtown is experiencing a surge in population and businesses that has been absent for decades. Most, if not all, the towers that define the LA skyline are financial office buildings constructed during downtown's dead period. There were few pedestrians to cater to, no street life. All of Los Angeles was largely still spread out. Now, the city's older urban centers are coming back to life, and neighborhoods like downtown and Hollywood are building up in response to the demand for housing and hotels centered around transit. New York has been like that for a hundred years. LA has never been that city, and only now is it starting to have pockets of it.

The low building at left; is that a residence built on top of it? How unusual. Is that common in LA? Great place to live although hot in summer.

Quick snap of Wilshire Grand. I didn't realize I didn't take photos of it until after I left. The crown is pretty much topped out on the right. All we are missing is the spire
We just had 3 projects break ground last week(37, 34, and 28 floors) and another is happening at the end of the month(40 and 31 floors). There is SO MUCH going on in our downtown.

Crown just did one of it's last major jumps. It is now roughly 1000ft. They'll be rounding out the shorter end of it to match the rest and the spire is coming next.

Here's some renders to give you an idea of what it'll look like.

They are getting closer, but only the portion of the crown that has been built is the portion directly over the core. it actually extends to the extreme east/west extensions on the tower. So the lowest and highest points on the crown aren't installed yet. I think they need to finish the main part of the structure before they finish those portions. Then the spire, which I heard will be installed in the fall...I think? They cant do it until all the rest of the work that needs the crane is finished I'm guessing.

So the building part of the structure has reached its highest point!

Yeah, it looks like you're correct about that. Seems like the crown will get some 30-40 feet longer in total, although the outermost portions (at least in the renders) look like they'll be supported by a web of much thinner steel spans, presumably so as not to add excess weight onto the top floor plate.
