If anything there seems to be overzealous over engineering compare to say Sears or original WTC. And the exceptionally tall (bk and JT) forget about it. Ratio of cost, materials, engineering to use is very high.

No hate, the architecture is stunning and makes a strong statement, but it is a lot of input per capita use.
Honestly what you state is a big reason why I think it's so hard to imagine a North American city, specifically New York, regaining the title of world's tallest building anytime soon.
The fact is that these super tall (MEGA tall) buildings being built in the Gulf Arab states are built with prestige first in mind and economic sense second. For example, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai has less square footage than Willis Tower in Chicago, despite the latter being 1,267 feet shorter. So the Burj Khalifa, which is more than an ENTIRE WILSHIRE GRAND taller than the Willis Tower, still has less square footage! It does seem crazy to build so tall to create a building that has less usable floor space than one much shorter, and one which can be built now for far cheaper.
They are different buildings and serve different purposes of course, but it does show that the economic reason for building so tall (above 2,000 feet) really isn't there yet, and building that tall is being built to be "tall" first and a financial success second.

(as an aside, for this tower the original plan by Korean Air was to build a 1,250 foot building. However, the economic justification just wasn't there. Had this been built with prestige first in mind, they would have kept to that 1,250 height no doubt)

Eh, not really. The tower is at the base of Bunker Hill with the main entrance on 5th. That elevation reaches the full 1018 foot height. You can see it with the stairs taking you to the higher points of the hill. Relatively, the walk from the lobby of the US Bank Tower to Wilshire Grand is flat, and I would even say that you have to climb up to the higher elevation of Figueroa and 6th (those stairs on the Citi National Plaza adjacent to Figueroa).

It's BofA and Wells Fargo that are exaggerated more than the US Bank Tower, since the next tallest building after it is 150 feet shorter.

Spire looks good from some angles such as the last aerial shot, but the way it's connected onto the side of the building instead of rising naturally out of the top makes it look haphazard.

May as well be precise about it. Using the Google Altitude Calculator, the Wilshire Grand sits at 290.25 ft., and the US Bank Tower is 310.6 ft. So yes, the US Bank has a roughly 20-foot elevation advantage, but it's hardly a difference-maker on the skyline.

Now that this building has truly topped out, I can see I'm really going to miss seeing it progress.

Hopefully this project is a success and leads to plans for L.A.'s next supernal. Soon!

I was fortunate to drive by the WG today on the 110 north, and I have to say that, for me at least, she has turned out to be a real beauty with that spire . I think a lot of the critiques so far have to do with the fact that the Wilshire Grand simply isn't finished yet, and a lot of the aesthetic qualities of the building are hidden due to the still unfinished sail and TC 1 still attached to the building (not complaints of course just obvious steps in the building process.) Once the building is fully complete and standing on its own then I think it will really shine

One thing to say though, this building is really best viewed from the southwest. From the north you get the more boxy, angular side of the building which, while nice, is not as substantial as from the south. Also from the north, it seems like the spire is hanging off the building in sort of a haphazard, "stuck on later" sort of way. I really hope that once the sail is finished it will look fully flush with the spire from all angles. If it doesn't then I think that will always be an unfortunate quirk of the wilshire grand.

Curious. Assuming a) the pic is legit and b) those are part of a contracted crew, then how is that not a violation of some safety codes per union regs? With the sole exception of transition between connections free standing at elevation isn't allowed here in GA.
