Please do a more thorough read of the thread next time.

Those funding/planning the project have decided their initial proposal of two towers -- one, shorter, for residential space and the new Wilshire Grand hotel; the other, taller, exclusively for commercial/business use -- was grossly overcompensating the demand for commercial floor space in Downtown LA.

They are instead combining both plans into one tall, all-purpose, mostly residential tower that is based on their initial design of the first, taller commercial tower. Demolition of the site is on the verge of beginning; I believe the latest concern is asbestos removal from the old Wilshire Grand structure.

Unfortunately, a few reporters who first leaked some of the new tower's technical data have misconstrued the given floor count to suggest it will have a shorter maximum roof height than currently listed (shorter than LA's current tallest tower). This information is faulty, as the number of proposed floors in a building is seldom indicative of its eventual height. Newer trends in office tower construction have increased ceiling height on each floor, for example, to allow a healthier and roomier working space, preferred by today's business clientele. The true height of the tower may be greater or less than any current information suggests.

Furthermore, soup-or-man's latest rendering suggests there has actually been LITTLE TO NO CHANGE WHATSOEVER to the conceptual design of the tall tower from its last iteration. It is still based on Half Dome, a sheer cliff-face in Yosemite National Park, hundreds of miles removed from Los Angeles. The only major changes will be to the interior of the tower.

It's amazing to even have a building of this scale be proposed in LA, let alone have it become reality (which appears to be well on it's way). Seriously, LA isn't those "other cities".

i love how people try to make you feel inferior on this site. i guess it goes without saying that a group of architecture enthusiasts are the stuff snobbery is made of. hopefully none of you are teachers, i'd feel sorry for your students. grow up, get some self esteem and for godssake harvest some patience.

The design was changed because Korean Air only wanted one tower so they merged the office and hotel space

Downtown LA News posted the following update on the "Latest on 75 Downtown Projects".

Quote:
Interior demolition, the first step in Korean Air’s plan to raze the aged Wilshire Grand Hotel and build a $1 billion tower in its place, is under way. A groundbreaking on the new 70-story tower with 900 hotel rooms and 400,000 square feet of office space is slated for 2013.

Oh well. Seems like a long time, but a year goes by fast.

That is also a way to get the design out.

I can CONFIRM that demo has started. Just walked past the Wishire and they have started gutting the building. It's finally starting to happen.
