The shape of new 1WTC is hardly original. The basic idea shows up in many concepts going back decades. The (now old) Wilshire Grand concept is nothing groundbreaking either, but has a lot more in common with BofA in NYC as well as a myriad of other skyscrapers worldwide, than it does with 1WTC.

This

Looks nothing like this.

Not even slightly. And even then we haven't seen offical renderings of the Wilshire Grand and even then it might be revised.

not in that model, but that's a model. I was just making an observation between renders, that's it.

When I first saw that rendering of the Wilshire Grand from across the 110, the first thing that came to mind was 1WTC. But that's really the only angle that shows any similarities -- very far from a "copy".

Didn't take a picture but I went downtown today and the entire hotel is fenced off.

Let's try to avoid the city vs city thing here. Both SF and LA are likely to get new tallest towers soon and that's incredible in and of itself.

There we go . All we really need is for the CAHSR project to go through successfully and California will really start to be like its own awesome country.

From NH with love and envy.

We are in the starting stages of a massive tower. Just think, in a few years, this will be gone and a tower going 60+ stories will be under construction.

In the article says that the hotel is from 1951, that building, which by the way is pretty ugly, obviously doesn't look like from the fifties, but like from the seventies or eighties instead.
Is that a renovation of the original building or an addition made in those years?

Renovation. Here's a picture of it from the 50s when it was know as the Statler Hotel.

Thank you.
I looked at google earth and find out that the picture you posted is of the Wilshire Blvd facade, at first I didn't understand the picture.
The original building wasn't very good, but that renovation is just awful. Whatsoever, it is coming down.

I agree. It looked much better before renovation. But no matter. It's coming down.

Do you know the means of demolition, Soup? Can't imagine they could dynamite very easily in that location.

This was strung up yesterday on the Wilshire side. Anyone know what this is supposed to be for?

Thank you Blackcat, you never cease to amaze me.

^I'm honored! Here is a anthropomorphized dancing banana

In very related news, the Downtown News has an article this week about the demolition process.

Here are the important points.

Starting next month, heavy machinery will begin the process of dismantling the building floor by floor. The schedule has the demolition process reaching ground level by late Spring of 2013, with underground excavation to be completed late in Summer. The foundation for the new building will be poured near the end of 2013, with the hotel intending to open in Fall of 2016.
