Considering that they lead up to the sky lobby, I'd imagine they will be.

I really like this tower; it looks like a pretty, simple, neat encapsulation of post-modern skyscraper design the world over. Seems like it's just what LA needs. I just hope that this is only the first of many more skyscraper designs. I know it's a common opinion of people who don't live in the city, but it really seems like it should become less sprawling.

It would be the world's second tallest after Taipei 101 in an earthquake prone area.

Atlantic Cities

The New Tallest Building on the West Coast

Designs for the new Wilshire Grand were released Thursday, giving Los Angeles a first glimpse of what the city skyline will look like come 2017.

The $1-billion hotel, office, and retail building, designed by AC Martin Partners and developed by Korean Air, will top off at 73 stories including the spire. It will beat out the West Coast's current tallest building, the city's U.S. Bank Tower, by 82 feet, according to the Los Angeles Times.

It's slated to open in 2017, replacing the old Wilshire Grand, which closed in 2011.

LA Weekly offers a a concise reason for why you should care: the hotel on the 70th floor will have a Sky Lobby with "staggering views of our metropolis." The top of the building is made entirely of glass, and its designed to "maximize" views of Santa Monica, the Pacific Ocean, Hollywood, and the city's much celebrated sunsets.

They report:

Quote:
As incredible as it may seem, Los Angeles currently offers nothing higher than a measly 35-story...viewing platform from which the public can take in its prodigious sprawl.

From no tall building can the public see both Catalina Island and Dodger Stadium (which, from an airplane, looks like a tiny teacup buried in bowl of coffee -- it's massive parking lot) in one good, long panoramic look.

North American Cities are really getting a comeback. New York, Toronto, Jersey, Los Angeles and maybe San Fransisco will all beat their tallest building in the next years.

Is this the actual size by looking at it threw the down town pictures. It doesnt even look as tall as I would hope so it goes a little over on Aon tower n the rest is that spire that goes up n I guess that makes it surpassing the US bank??? Something is not fitting quit their if only they could still make it the full 1,250ft or make it 1,100 to the crown n then add another 100 ft or so to the spire then that would be awesome, what you think guys??

So it's just the spire that makes it taller?

That's what I was afraid would happen with the spire. Now there will be endless debate and confusion on which building is the tallest.

^ But at the end of the day, does it really matter? I'm not really caught up in the whole notion that Wilshire Grand might or might not be 'taller' than US Bank. I'm just excited that we are getting this building.

Seems so. I like the project, but i hate cheating height with a thin and tall spire.

the top of the crown of WGT and the top of the roof of the USBT are nearly the same, with the WGT slightly taller. Remember the USBT is atop a hill.

Agreed. First or second, doesn't really matter to me.

New York has a bunch of spires. Whether those should be considered in the final and not the Wilshire Grand's is subjective.
