Back on topic guys, this isn't a city vs city thread.

Anyways. I walked past the Wilshire Grand today. Unfortunately I didn't have my phone but it's near gone. Should be seeing the digging soon. I'm wondering how this will effect the Regional Connector with both the projects parallel to each other.

Yes you are right. We build with earthquakes in mind and that's we we have less, and got started later.

Wilshire Grand:

It's amazing how it's almost all gone, I didn't think they would get it done so quickly.

Chicago has about 1,200 highrises, while LA is less than half at around 510. We are catching up, but it'll be another 50 years before we are anything like the Chicago of today. The subways will be the backbone of that. It'll link the city, and I can't imagine how many projects will have been completed in 50 years.

I can't see how the regional connector and the Wilshire Grand would conflict with one another, unless you mean traffic from construction/excavation related activities.

The bigger concern for the Wilshire Grand are the Red/Purple line tunnels running underneath the site. If those tunnels are damaged during excavation, we'd be looking at some very serious problems.

All that's left standing is the bit on the Wilshire side, which will probably be gone by the end of the week.

Thanks blackcat23 and Mojeda for the photo updates!

Viewing your pics back-to-back is like watching a time-lapse video of this tower's development!

To roof the wilshire grand is taller than the transbay tower, thought the parapet ot the transbay is taller than the crown of the wilshire grand. the crown of the wilshire grand stands at exactly 1,000 ft, either way wilshire grand is taller by roof height and by architectural height, but both will be smaller than the USBT in roof height.

Where did you hear that? All I know is to roof height, the Wilshire will be at 934 and to the tip of the Spire, it'll hit 1,100. So all inbetween is the Spire and the Crown.

Pretty much all that's left is that little chunk on the Wilshire side.

I quite don't remember the source, but it was stated that the spire would be 100 feet tall, making the tower plus the crown exactly 1,000 feet.

Related interesting side note:

1950s LA Petroleum Club Mural Unearthed at Wilshire Grand

Right now, Downtown's Wilshire Grand is undergoing a lengthy demolition so that it can one day be rebuilt into the West Coast's new tallest tower. But before it peaced out forever, the hotel offered up a little treasure: a 15-foot-long, mid-century mosaic mural showing "the Port of Los Angeles, and scenes of oil refineries, oil derricks and ships." The Wilshire Grand opened as the Statler Hotel in 1952 and its early days the Los Angeles Petroleum Club "maintained a posh member's suite at the hotel" adorned with a mural by an artist named John Smith, according to Mosaic Art Now (via History, Los Angeles County): "The handmade mosaic done in a classic modernist abstract style appeared to be squarely a product of the 1950s."

But the Petroleum Club was converted into a storage area in the '80s (or before) and the mural was covered over with wood panels right up until last year's big liquidation sale, when a local interior designer named Gregory Johnson unearthed it--"the staff knew nothing about it" and the "glass tiles were covered with layers of cigarette smoke and years of yellowed funk." The 6'10" by 15" mural was mounted on a plywood backing, so Johnson was able to buy it and move it into his house, lucky him.

Nope. Look at the pics above. The old building is being taken apart. I think we can move the thread once the concrete pour begins on December 17th.

..
NOTE
Cool. That piece of wall should be placed in the lobby of the new tower.

Before they pour, how deep below street level is the dig again? Sorry if it was already mentioned.
