DTLA is the living proof that what matters is not quantity but quality. When you have tall, good looking modern towers well spread in the skyline and visible from any vantage points (thanks to the low density of its surroundings neighorhoods), then you have one of the best looking CBD on earth.

As will Philadelphia and Miami... That's 8 cities with supertalls, more than the UAE and not a far cry from China.

I didn't say you were criticizing, I just don't know why people from the US are so self deprecating and complain. I mean come on, plenty of countries don't even have skyscrapers let alone supertall ones.

Quote:
Back on topic to Wilshire Grand specifically. Is the "towering billboard" going to happen or even allowed? Will other DT buildings follow suit for the ad dollars? Will downtown LA look like a mini Hong Kong or Shanghai with groovy lights? I kind of hope that it does (I like the lights)...
It is L.A. so I wouldn't be surprised.

Quote:
The dynamic in the US is different than other places where supertalls go up for prestige (and yes economic and market factors too) again my opinion only)) --- China, Moscow, Dubai come to mind... You'd think Tokyo with it's congestion would have more earthquake resistant supertalls?... In my opinion it will be a very long time before San Francisco sees another supertall. Way too many NIMBY's.
US still kind of does it for prestige but it's still pretty amazing that there is actually demand for these huge towers.

Quote:
I only said that I "read somewhere" (long ago) about lenders and insurers not especially keen on these supertalls in the US (post 911 risk factors/jitters?).
Maybe right after 9/11 but things have changed, an asteroid could crash into the earth and kill us all too, should we be worrying about that all the time?

Most people thought that after 9/11 the US would never see supertalls again, good to know they couldn't have been more wrong.

They use prefabricated rebar. That should speed up the process.
