Ostend, a north sea town

Originally a fishertown and small commercial port Ostend turned into one of the most beautiful and important European seaside resorts in the beginning of the 19th century when the English imported the first mass tourism and the Belgian kings started to spent their summers there. Unfortunatly world war 2 destroyed the historical heart of the town and real estate investors tore down most of the 19th villa's and houses to build more profitable apartments so these days the city is only a shadow of what it once was. But there are still some remains which show its former beauty and it remains a pleasant holiday destination for a lot of Belgians.

Ostend or Oostende is a very nice and beautiful city indeed; thanks for those photos

Wonderful pictures - Oostende looks like a lovely place, a typical attractive North Sea seaside resort town I guess.

This is the city were I was born and were I was raised.

Itīs a city with a very special character. Itīs a harbour city so it can be a bit rough at some points but thatīs what makes it special!

Great pics Evan. I like Ostend because it's not only a beach-resort town, but a real life city. The big painter James Ensor was born and lived in Ostend. And soul-singer-song writer Marvin Gay spent some time here.

It's not that big, only 70.000 inhabitants. But it looks much bigger because of the nice old houses and the huge concrete buildings.

And while it only has 70.000 real inhabitants the population can grow to about half a million during the summer. When you combine that with the people who are only there for one day you get the feeling of much bigger and livelier city then usual for this size.

Thanks for the compliments everyone
