Downtown Events and Happenings

This Saturday Night at 9pm on the amenities deck of 900 Biscayne, the Friends of the New World Symphony will host an amazing event open to the public.
Imagine the Full Moon reflecting off of the Biscayne Bay, the City Lights, and the best musicians in South Florida.
NWS Fellow, Sam Hyken has composed original music for his last Fellows performance, and it will be fantastic. The orchestration doesn't allow enough space for the full 87 member Symphony, so Sam is going into the studio to record some tracks on vinyl. The producer will spin the records and the Fellows will accompany them.
Included in the $50 ticket price are complimentary valet parking, food, and Chopin Vodka will sponsor the bar. 100% percent of the ticket price will go toward the NWS and will support the new Frank Gehry Campus.

Speaking of downtown events, did anyone run the corporate run this year? I had to sit out with a bum knee this year but I know its always a great time.

Classics rock at New World Symphony bash
By LESLEY ABRAVANEL lank@aol.com

The seasons may not change much here, but they sure do come to an end -- and for some, with a bigger bang than for others. Take the Friends of the New World Symphony, for example. The group is hosting a rocking, two-hour music festival on Saturday to celebrate the end of so-called ''season.'' It's appropriately titled Symphony and Mystery because, in our own interpretation, it's a mystery as to whether summer will bring us to an audible halt of activity or, fingers crossed, vice-versa. Whatever the meaning, the music starts at 9 p.m. at the pool at 900 Biscayne Bay -- one of those cool but cavernously vacant condos -- and will feature performances by NWS fellows showcasing the works of Sam Hyken as well as a set by The Mysterytones (so that's it!), a seven-piece funk, rhythm and blues band, as well as the requisite DJ-ing, this time by DJ JJ Neil. To get your ticket -- it's $50 -- e-mail stacey.glassman@nws.edu or call 305-673-3330, ext. 230.

Here are some pictures from 900 Biscayne/ Friends of the New World Symphony party. The beginging shots are mostly on the amenities deck, but that last half dozen or so are some nice night time shots of the Magic City under a full moon.

AmericanAirlines Arena Creates Times Square South with Unveiling of Three-Story High MiamiMediaMesh

http://www.reuters.com/article/press...009+BW20090528

http://www.nba.com/heat/news/aaa_unv...edia_mesh.html

MIAMI, FL – May 27, 2009 – The AmericanAirlines Arena, Miami’s top sports and entertainment venue and home of the 2006 NBA Champion Miami HEAT, unveiled MiamiMediaMesh at AmericanAirlines Arena, the first-of-its-kind energy-efficient digital media façade that will transform downtown Miami into Times Square South. Blending seamlessly with the Arena architecture, MiamiMediaMesh covers 3,400 square feet of the Arena’s west face, making it the largest digital LED display in the Southeast region of the United States.

“MiamiMediaMesh is a transforming advertising and promotional platform never before seen in the Miami community,” said Eric Woolworth, President of Business Operations for The HEAT Group. “MiamiMediaMesh will be a centerpiece for our city, serving as an innovative and bold advertising stage and event marquee, and giving Miami its own version of Times Square.”

MiamiMediaMesh will provide official sponsors of the Miami HEAT and AmericanAirlines Arena with tremendous reach for their sponsorship and promotional messaging. Moreover, concerts and special events taking place at the Arena will reap quantifiable benefits from having constant exposure on MiamiMediaMesh. The new LED display will face South Florida’s high-traffic Biscayne Boulevard and will be visible to traffic heading to the Port of Miami. In addition to the more than 1.4 million visitors to AmericanAirlines Arena annually, this will make MiamiMediaMesh viewable to the over 3.8 million cruise passengers visiting the Port each year and the 65,000 cars on Biscayne Boulevard every day. The first sponsors creating uniquely visual campaigns for the MiamiMediaMesh include American Airlines, Assist-Card Corporation, Bacardi, Doctors Hospital Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, a part of Baptist Health South Florida, the Miller Lite Concert Series, Miccosukee Resort & Gaming and RRA (Rothstein, Rosenfeldt Adler). The Miami HEAT / AmericanAirlines Arena Corporate Sales Division is the primary sales agent for MiamiMediaMesh. Potential sponsors interested in learning more about MiamiMediaMesh should contact Stephen Weber, Executive Vice President of Corporate Sales at 786.777.4203 or sweber@heat.com or MiamiMediaMesh@HEAT.com.

In conjunction with the unveiling, the AmericanAirlines Arena also plans to have some fun with the local community by making the new MiamiMediaMesh interactive and opening it to the local community as a message board. Residents and visitors are invited to send messages and well wishes or answer the traditional “What are you doing?” via Twitter and see some of their selected comments become larger than life on the AA Arena’s new digital display. To participate, send Tweets to @MiamiMediaMesh or traditional emails to MiamiMediaMesh@heat.com. Selected messages will be randomly displayed throughout the day.

AmericanAirlines Arena worked with A2aMEDIA, a next-generation media company that designs, installs and operates large-scale outdoor LED displays as transparent building facades, to bring the patent-pending Mediamesh® technology to the South Florida venue. A2aMEDIA has applied Mediamesh, which the company licenses from the two German organizations that manufacture the product, ag4 and GKD, to create a uniquely-transparent surface for exhibiting digital images on large-scale buildings.

“We are thrilled to have a prominent landmark building like the AmericanAirlines Arena as our first-ever entertainment venue installation,” said Andrew Melton, president of A2aMEDIA. “The application of this unique technology will transform the already remarkable venue into an icon of architectural and digital media harmony. The Arena’s application of the Mediamesh façade to engage and interact with the local community is not only progressive, but evidence of their commitment to employing cutting-edge technology in order to continue to serve as a premier South Florida destination.”

A2aMEDIA is the first to bring Mediamesh technology to the U.S. and Canada through an agreement to purchase and sell the technology, while developing a national network of transparent, energy-efficient media facades which will serve as branding and advertising platforms. This unique motion graphics advertising platform represents A2aMEDIA’s and The HEAT Group’s commitment to applying efficient technology to enhance the public’s media experience, while integrating creative and impactful sports marketing sponsorships.

I saw that last week on Biscayne Blvd and I throw out a "WTF?!" in excitement lol. It looks nice. I really liked it. This would look sweet next to the weird electronicy-octupus-looking cover for the water plant at Bicentennial Park.

Roark, tell them next time they can use any of my photos of 900 Biscayne rather than this building in Los Angeles that we all know is not part of the Miami skyline.

What a great event...

Tonight the Bank of America Building was lit up in Green and Orange for a Farewell Event for Mayor Diaz. It was an extraordinary night full of happy celebration. Especially touching was when Mayor Diaz walked in and saw Commish Johnny Winton.
Video monitors were paging through photographs from the last 8 years. Extraordinary to see the people, the shovels, the construction, the progress, and the accomplishments.

Then there was a video tribute with thank yous from many of the Nations most prominent Mayors (Oscar Goodman being my favorite!). Astounding to hear the accolades of other Mayors speaking of Manny's passion for Miami and dedication to the advancement of ALL Mayors nationwide. The video tributes ended with Chief Timoney saying some very moving words.
Mayor Diaz first thanked his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and parents for every dish that they washed, room they cleaned, and car that they parked to earn the money to give him an education better a life and to live the American Dream.

Then the toasts! Lot's of them! Again Timoney toasted Manny with some very touching and celebratory words. The last toast from the Mayor's football coach son, Manny Jr., were some football analogies that brought down the house with laughter and and then concluded with fireworks.

There were more than a few people there with Heat-Cavs Tickets in their pocket understanding that this event was so much more important.

Thanks Mayor!

Tonight at the Gusman

If you live in Downtown, you still have time to walk over the Gusman to check out the Borscht Film Festival

Borscht Film Festival
The Borscht Film Festival is Miami's fresh independent film fest. This free event will showcase the best of Miami's emerging independent film scene, featuring Miami filmmakers under 30 making films about the city.

Included is the CCCV Stories series, where five filmmakers were commissioned to each tell a distinctly Miami story, taking place in a specific Miami neighborhood.

International Council of Shopping Centers

ICSC is featuring a program next month titled:
Quote:
Focus on Brickell/Downtown

Over the past five years, there is not a submarket in South Florida that has undergone the level of evolution of Brickell/Downtown Miami. Once considered a one dimensional, office-centric market that relied solely on daytime population and tourism for commerce, the region has evolved into a dynamic mix of office, residential, and retail that has become one of the most attractive and sought after destinations in Florida for premier users in all three categories. Its close proximity to the major transportation hubs of Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami, ever-increasing densities, attractive urban lifestyle, and panoramic views of Biscayne Bay will likely all continue to contribute to its future growth and prosperity. We have brought together a distinguished panel of the region’s top experts with 60+ years of experience in their respective areas of specialization to discuss how far the area has come, where it stands today, and where they see it going. We are sure that you will find the panel both informative and entertaining and look forward to seeing you there.
