Isle of Staffa (Gaelic: Stafa), Inner Hebrides (Na h-Eileanan a-staigh)
The name comes from the Old Norse for stave or pillar island. The Vikings gave it this name as its columnar basalt reminded them of their houses, which were built from vertically placed tree-logs. The island's main sea cavern is named 'Fingal's Cave' which inspired Felix Mendelssohn upon his visit to then write the "Hebrides Overture". image hosted on flickr ![]() Staffa - Fingal's Cave entrance by lardus, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Staffa by féileacán, on Flickr Courtesy of Salen Pier House image hosted on flickr ![]() Staffa by wanderingz, on Flickr image hosted on flickr ![]() Staffa Scotland by TomDubya1, on Flickr |

The Scottish Parliament (Gaelic: Pàrlamaid na h-Alba - Scots: The Scots Pairliament), Edinburgh (Dùn Èideann), Scotland (Alba)
On this historic day of a successive SNP Government in the Scottish Parliament I give you an overview of the Parliament building. The building was designed by Spanish Catalan architect Enric Miralles who unfortunately died prior to its completion. The building is located within a UNESCO World Heritage Site and opened in 2004. The principal features of the complex include leaf and 'up turned' boat shaped buildings, a grass-roofed branch merging into adjacent parkland and walls formed from the stones of previous historic buildings.
