Majorstuen it is! (Majorstuen is the correct spelling, as the place is named after an old military officer ("major") named 'Stuen' living there )Starting of with a map of the route I walked: ![]() And off with the pictures. The first one is a classic, showing the view when exiting Majorstuen subway station: ![]() Majorstuhuset, the station building from 1930 ![]() Down Slemdalsveien ![]() And up Valkyriegaten, an important stretch for trams, and traffic from Ring 2 ![]() Jacob Aals gate ![]() But now, off to the less trafficed paths. This are is dominated by residentals. Majorstuen is the densest populated area in all of Oslo (and probably all of Norway) ![]() It's on the westside, and quite pricy ![]() In the background you can see the Holmenkollen hill ![]() Some of the buildings reminds more of townhouses ![]() The streetname "Sorgenfrigaten", actually means "No worries street" or "No sorrows street". ![]() What I notice is the extreme levels of maintainance. This style is common all over the city, but nowhere are the balconies so white, and so perfectly angled. ![]() Trudvangveien ![]() When you're rich, you can afford to not put your building all the way out to the pavement, but have a useless strip of lawn in between. Gated, that is. ![]() ![]() This building is probably (a bit) newer ![]() Now at Kirkeveien/Ring 2. Don't get fooled by my unlucky shot. This road sees a lot of traffic. Especially on a Tuesday like this. ![]() More Jacob Aals gate ![]() Cute cat watching the door of this building ![]() Facade detail ![]() As all Oslo boroughs, there's always some highrises hiding at various locations. This one was discovered in Ole Vigs gate ![]() Functionalism ![]() The mandatory shot of the chaos that is Bogstadveien/Rv168. There was a scheme in the 20ies to widen the street, as it is an important route to downtown from Northern/Western suburbs. As mandatory with such schemes in this city, this was only done halfway, and stopped when people didn't see it economical anymore. IMO, this scheme should be continued! Tear the old 1800s buildings down, and create a good street for both trams pedestrians and cars. ![]() Commie-style blocks in Industrigata ![]() This unimportant sidestreet, Dybwads gate, has been made into a playground/pedestrian route. Good planning. ![]() Back at Bogstadveien. This building and it's neighbors have been suggested for a new mini-mall. Hopefully it will go through, and this building will get an upgrade! ![]() ![]() Sidestreet, Neuberggate. Gosh what difference some nice balconies make! ![]() ![]() Jabob Aalls gate, again... ![]() Now that's what a corner building should look like! ![]() Back at Majorstuhuset, it's time for a pano of all it's glory. ![]() Now heading down for the newer office district west of Majorstuen subway station. Another highrise (though residental. We love to mix useage! )![]() Majorstuen school ![]() And one of Oslo's best looking highrises, KPMG-bygget! ![]() Colosseum is the cinema in Oslo, and has Norway's biggest screen. Though I remembered it to be red... ![]() Expanding Majorstuen with new housing along Sørkedalsveien. Here Rv168 has all the room it needs (and a little bit more...) ![]() Majorstuen school seen from the side ![]() And finally looking back at Majorstukrysset while waiting for the bus in Kirkeveien ![]() Hope you also liked our westside, though there is a lot more to explore!

Majorstua is named after an officer, but his name was Michael Wilhelm Sundt. I like this area, though. It is almost a second city centre for Oslo.

Wikipedia also claims that Majorstua was the original name before the local dialect (sociolect) changed it to Majorstuen. EDIT: Actually Wikipedia claims that the locals in Aker called the place Majorstua. It doesn't really say that this name predates Majorstuen |

Thanks for a great and informative trip around the Majorstuen area, IceCheese. It was both pleasant and educational

Oh, this thread still exists....??
Oslo (Bjørvika/Gamle Oslo) Had some fun with the camera today, and I'm guessing this is a bit different from my usual photo-walks... Be nice with your judgement, I'm still pretty much a DSLR-noob. I've also redone my watermark to blend in more, and be less of a focus point (didn't work so good on the dark pics, though). Feedback on this is welcome. No comments -_- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last one's for you Þróndeimr, if you can read it!

Yes, a view I've expressed many times before. If the in-between plots aren't going to be utilized better than today, I'd rather have a continuos grand street. We can make some bløtkake-ornaments on the new buildings, if you'd like that. The building in the last photo of yours wouldn't need to go, though. The southside in Bogstadveien, and the northside in Hegdehaugsveien. Referance the discussion we had last summer: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...n#post78790754

Yes, and you were wrong then and you are wrong now. And what's the point with widening the upper part (bogstadveien) if the lower part is being kept with the same wide (hegheaugsveien)?
