Unrestored houses like this are often owned by people from Western Germany, or even foreigners, who bought them in the early 90s and were hoping for a luctrative investment. Outside the economic centres such investments however often don't work out anymore, the owners of these houses don't invest and the house will collapse one day. Usually there is nothing a town can do against it.

A house like this (probably Renaissance and not Neo-Renaissance) in this condition costs between 20.000 and 60.000 Euros. The restoration probably between 1 and 2,5 mio €uros. 3/4 of the investment are usually covered by different funds.

This is Güstrows most important building. The castle is one of the first and most important Renaissance buildings in Germany. It was built by members of the Parr family, who came from Italy and also introduced the Renaissance to Silesia before:

For a short time the castle was owned by Wallenstein/Waldstein/Valdstejn

I love this part of Europe and Germany!
Extraordinary nice beaches and towns!
I have a summer house just north of Rügen in Falsterbo (Sweden) which also is a stunning place!

What a wonderful thread! I was in Hamburg last year and I totally wanted to visit Lübeck and Stralsund, but I went to Copenhagen and Stockholm instead. I hope to visit the beautiful region soon.

Great photos! It's sad though to see some of those homes abandoned. Is there really nothing the municipal authorities can do to prevent that or force the owners to keep the property in a semi-livable state??

Well I guess most of those houses were already abandoned during GDR times.
There is probably no money for renovation and for private investors it doesn't pay off because purchasing power ist pretty low there. Alot of people moving towards West/South Germany.
