German medieval gems: Michelstadt im Odenwald

After presenting you Limburg in Western Hesse, it's now time to show you a town in Southern Hesse.

I was in Michelstadt today. Michelstadt is one of the bigger towns in the Odenwald region between Darmstadt and Heidelberg. The town has a total population of ca. 17,000. I took a walk in the old town.

Some streetviews and houses

This is the central market square

The protestant church and the old City Hall are located at the market square

Ad for the local bread market which was held this weekend

View to the Kellerei, in whose yard the small market was held. The Kellerei is a part of a former franconian castle.

Pure Germany!

This park belongs to a part of the old city wall with its fosse

The Kellerei seen from the "outside"

This tower was also part of an old franconian castle and became later part of the city wall

Enjoy

Magnificent!

By the way, are they original buildings or were they rebuilt to look old like many in Munich were?

Youch, so stunningly beautiful it hurts.

I have to say it, "they don't make them like they used to"!

as far as i know, Michelstadt didn't suffer from WWII, so the very most of these buildings are pretty old.

For example the text on the left house says that it was built before 1753.

You can be sure, that this summer, when football takes a break, I'll try to visit as much old towns as possible that I can reach with my Semesterticket
Next planned destinations will be Büdingen, Butzbach and Herborn. I'm quite on a Fachwerktrip now
