They probably just wanted some time to re-evaluate their options. The rumour is that they didn't pay any penalty for the cancellation and the entire deposit got moved to the last A380 order. So, the only disadvantage is perhaps getting any potential order later than originally.

EK's inflight upgrade

Can anyone kindly please let me know this - did EK refurbish/upgrade the IFE system on all of the 777s on its fleet or there is still some work left?

No. They will not refurbish B777's with the new IFE, only A380's were being refurbished. Only the B777's delivered after 2011 have the new HD IFE.

They probably said that to try and make Boeing give them a better deal on the B787's.

Could they not simply have the A350 on the orderbooks before finally making a decision, likewise why would they want to delay such an order when they are in the process of withdrawing its A330s, 777 Classics and A340s.

Why not? The 777Xs are only coming in the 2020s and that assumes there are no delays to the programmes beforehand.

I'm not sure. They have many types of B777's. Some are really old, some are 5-10 yrs old, and some came after 2011. I guess they didn't see the point in refurbishing those older B777's because they were close to retirement.

I understanding why they would not refurbish their 777-200ERs and 777-300s, they are on their way out as of now. The 777-200LRs and 777-300ERs are on the other hand only 10 years old at most and they are not going until the 2020s at least. Those are the planes that should be refurbished if needed since they currently form half the fleet as it stands.

EK has order 100+ 777Xs that will be coming into the fleet at the start of the 2020s so EK is not going to spend the money on the current fleet that will be used only for a couple of years and save that money to develop a new brand and pay off the current bills.

That is over 5 years away and likewise that assumes that the 777X Project will not be delayed. Even if it was not delayed you are looking into the Mid-2020s before all the Pre-2011 aircraft are replaced.

I agree but maybe they can't take them out of service. Remember that the A380's each had to go out of service because Airbus had to fix the wing crack problem which had developed. So EK probaby retrofitted them whilst they were being fixed. That's not the case with B777's though and taking them out service is just lost revenue for the airline.

EK's wing fixes are all complete, they're fixing the doors now. Notice how each air frame is only taken out of service for about two weeks now, instead of two and a half months.

I certainly hope that EK goes for B787-10 rather than A350-900.... I would loove to see the beautiful Dreamliner in EK colours!

Ethiopian bidding with Etihad to partner with RwandAir

Quote:
Ethiopian Airlines is competing with Etihad Airways of Abu Dhabi to partner with the national flag carrier of Rwanda, RwandAir.

The management of RwandAir is looking for a strategic partner. The board of directors of RwandAir and the Rwandese Transport Ministry has offered to sell a 49 percent stake on RwandAir.

CEO of RwandAir, John Mirange, told The Reporter that Ethiopian Airlines, and Etihad Airways are among the international companies that had submitted expression of interest to the Rwandese government to buy stake on RwandAir. The prospective partner will own 49 percent stake on the East African airline and will jointly manage the airline and caters technical services.

“Ethiopian Airlines is definitely one of the few airlines that we are talking to. We are also talking to Etihad Airways. We are talking to quite a few airlines. We are looking for the right airline that would fit in,” Mirange said. He said that the management board of RwandAir and the Ministry of Transport are evaluating the proposals submitted by the international airlines. “We are holding discussions and exchanging data with the international airlines that have shown interest in partnering with us” Mirange said.
