Emirates to Newcastle (NCL)

Rumours going around for some time now that Emirates will launch flights from Newcastle (NCL) in the United Kingdom to Dubai in 2007.

I noticed yesterday that Newcastle is now listed on the timetable page at emirates.com
http://www.emirates.com/uk/ekschedul...tschedules.asp

Does anyone know anymore about this? When/if it will be officially announced? When flights will start? How often flights will operate etc?

My guess would be 4x weekly with an Airbus A330.

Wow well thats interesting, this will be the 6th UK airport that Emirates serves, which is pretty impressive. I currently go down to Manchester from Durham to catch a flight down to Dubai to visit family over the holidays. Now it'll just be a 15 minute train journey to newcastle....excellent.

Etihad to fly to Australia

UAE's Etihad Airways wins Australia flying rights
9-January-07 by AAP

Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways said today it has won the right to fly to Australia from its base in the United Arab Emirates.

Gulf Arab states, reaping a windfall from a tripling in oil prices since 2001, are expanding their airlines and using their Middle East hubs to carry more passengers and cargo between Europe and Asia, boosting competition for rivals such as Singapore Airlines and Qantas.

Etihad's flights to Australia will begin in the next few months, the government-owned carrier said in a statement.

It did not give more details.

"Our service will significantly drive and support the development of trade and tourism between the UAE and Australia," Etihad Chief Executive James Hogan is quoted as saying in the statement.

Etihad, which started in 2003, competes with Dubai-based Emirates and Qatar Airways.

The carrier, which flies to 47 destinations in the Middle East, Europe, North America, Africa and Asia, operates 21 aircraft and has 25 more on order.

YaY! I hope it will fly to Perth. Maybe the Emirates airfares will become cheaper because of competition.

Will these flights be non-stop? Or will they have layovers in Southeast Asia(either BKK, KUL, SIN, or HKG)?

That might depend on the type of aircraft they use. The 777-200LR would be able to make that route non-stop fairly easily. As would the A340-500 i believe (the plane emirates uses for their australian destinations)

Good to see Etihad doing well, they're so much better than Emirates. They're also increasing Joburg from 2 to 7 weekly.

Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways (Asian Carriers that reach all continental commercial airports)

I'm not sure about Qatar Airways.

I don't think so as they dont serve oceania or america(they lost their opportunity to serve australia if I remember correctly) but they will be starting their own Sao Paulo flight.
