Off the top of my head, these are the only similarities I can think of between the two:
1. Both are hot and surrounded by a desert
2. Both cities are built up and feel very artificial.
3. Both are heavily reliant on imported labor

...Yep, that's pretty much it!

yes, like connecting venus with mars..

IMO, they should add Phoenix to it (of course they won't be allowed to carry passengers between 2 cities)...There is a decent sized Middle Eastern South Asian population there!!

The 2016 IATA world airline rankings are out now:

Unfortunately IATA have put most of the statistics behind a paywall, but the two main stats for airlines - RPK's and FTK's - are still free (for now).

Good to see EK at #4 in the world in terms of RPK's. It will probably be #1 by 2020.

Emirates has made some further operational amendements.

Lagos has been reduced from twice daily to daily since July.
From August BKK will be reduced to 6 daily and flights to SAW will be cancelled.
From September LIS will be reduced from twice daily to daily and from October FCO from trice daily to twice daily.

On the other side FCO will be double daily A380 from 1st September and BKK will get a 5th daily A380 rotation from 1st January. Flydubai will launch double daily flights to BKK from 29th November. The A380 to DME will be back from 1st October. WAW and NCE are rumoured to be the next European A380 destinations.

Due to lower demand to Brazil the B77W from GIG-EZE will be re-allocated to MCO whereas the B77L will be used for GIG-EZE from 1st September.

I wonder why they have reduced frequencies on some of those routes...maybe lower demand?

I can speak for the BKK case, that's highly likely the reason as I see the fares are low with Emirates this summer from BKK to Europe, even after that cancellation. That is really strange as last year I paid almost double of what I paid this year for pretty much the same date.

Now that you mention it, BKK flights are indeed cheap! But I have been seeing that for a while now already, a return ticket usually starts around 500 !

But I was surprised with EK's reduction of Rome, lisbon, and Brazil...I really thought they had enough pax on these routes, especially Rome and Lisbon!

Surprisingly, Dubai has two underserved cities: Manila and London/Heathrow, based on the latest report from OAG. And the most underserved pair this year is Jeddah to Jakarta, with several other city pairs from the Middle East making the list.

Qatar Airways will launch a direct flight between Doha and Santiago in February.

Along with its new direct AKL flight (starting on the 1st of February), it will become one of the longest flights in the world.

They actually took delivery of their 119th, and 120th around the same time.

Indications are that Dubai - UK bookings which accounted for around 10% of gross longhaul traffic are down since Brexit and Dubai - China traffic has stalled at least. That was around 12% of longhaul traffic.

EK may have problems filling the gaps and may well stop growing in 2017.

So much rational discussion about Emirates and then there is Qatar Airways that will start flying to Pisa, Auckland, Santiago and Windhoek among many other equally weird destinations soon!!

I was worried this might start happening to EK due to Brexit, do you have any link regarding this?

I'm afraid that might be true. We have already been seeing some reductions/downgrading aircraft on some EK routes. And if you have noticed, EK hasn't been announcing much new destinations as they usually do. Sometime, they even declare where they will fly to months or even a year in advance! But I think for 2017 there is still no new destinations announced afaik.
