EK to introduce Premium Economy

So apparently here is a big news, which I suspect has been discussed in the recent big meeting of EK.. they plan to introduce Premium Economy Cabin throughout their fleet within the next 1.5 year. But details of number of seats, type of product, and cabin space has not been published yet.

More on Ben's blog:

I'm more worried about the inevitable 10 across economy seats they will refit their 777s with at the same time.

Everyone in the long haul space seems to have 'a plan' to make cattle class more cattleificatious by the end of the decade. BA recently announced their 777 retrofit.

An 11 across A380 cabin must be fairly close too. Airbus mocked one last year for the a350-1000 .

EK's 777s already have 3-4-3 (10 abreast) seating on their Y class. So I don't really follow what you mean..

btw, 11 across is just... fugly.

Sponge Bob, perhaps it's Cathay you are referring to that will introduce a 10-abreast 777. As Manazir said, EKs 777s are already at 3-4-3 for as long as I can remember.

Premium economy with EK is a very interesting development. Wonder how they will market it and to which routes it will be flown to? I've noticed EK has started to promote their Y product more which is very different to a few years ago when they used to market themselves as the most luxurious carrier. Clark also said EK will updating their J product completely on the B777-9's. Guess they realized they can't compete with EY/QR with their current product.

When you're bigger, you can benefit from economies of scale. And flying larger aircraft around gives you a lower cost per seat, BUT, that's only if you can fill the plane. I believe Clark said that the A380 has the lowest cost per seat for EK provided the plane is at least 85% full.

Didn't Emirates just recently announced their brand new and 'underwhelming' 777 business class product?

Jawzus.

I assume that business class variant is for short haul Dubai (3-4 hour) < > near Asia and near Africa flights, not for a 10 hour leg to the US or to OZ?????

They have the 2-3-2 layout on all their 777 including long haul 14h+.
The current one isn't even fully flat.

Yes, this is the J product on all new B77W's, and it's quite similar to the old B777 J product.

That is the product on any route where EK sends B777s (including ULH flights). It's quite outdated but I guess it makes them money.

No wonder they need Premium Economy.

Mind you that thing could be OK for them if they priced it right but Qatar would have a field day in a 1 on 1 on some routes.

Emirates should just kick out their stupid first class. Not much more expensive than J but take up lots of space and resources. And on 90% of the flights its almost empty anyway. Maybe one or two paying customers and the rest upgraders. (Maybe keep it only on selected premium long haul routes)

Better have proper business (2-2-2, or similar to A380 layout) in the front and really competitive premium economy (2-3-2, similar to current 777 business class).
