Boeing, Emirates Announce Commitment for 40 787-10 Dreamliners

Quote:
One of the world's largest airlines picks the ultra-efficient 787 to optimize its future fleet Airplane deal to sustain tens of thousands U.S. jobs

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Nov. 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Emirates, one of the world's largest airlines, announced a commitment to purchase 40 787-10 Dreamliners at the 2017 Dubai Airshow. The deal, including airplanes and related equipment, is valued at $15.1 billion at current list prices.

Emirates is the world's largest Boeing 777 operator and will be the first to receive the new 777X in 2020. In selecting the 787-10, Emirates complements their 777 fleet with a medium twin-aisle airplane that offers 25 percent better fuel efficiency per seat and emissions than the airplanes it replaces.

"Emirates' orders today will be delivered from 2022, taking the airline well into the 2030s. Some of these will be replacements so that we maintain a young and efficient fleet, and others will power our future network growth. We see the 787 as a great complement to our 777 and A380 fleet, providing us with more flexibility to serve a range of destinations as we develop our global route network," said His Highness Sheik Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates Airline and Group. "It has always been Emirates' strategy to invest in the most advanced and efficient aircraft, and today's orders reflect that. Today's announcement also speaks to our confidence in the future of aviation in the UAE and the region."

"We are excited that Emirates has selected the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner to power its fleet expansion and future growth. This is an airplane that will set a new benchmark for operating economics in the commercial aviation industry when it enters service next year," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President & CEO Kevin McAllister. "Emirates' endorsement of the 787 Dreamliner extends our long-standing partnership and will sustain many jobs in the United States."

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce formula, a deal of this size would support more than 75,000 direct and indirect US jobs.

The 787-10 is the largest member of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner family, which is the fastest-selling twin-aisle airplane in history. More than 65 customers have ordered more than 1,275 Dreamliners to date thanks to the family's ultra-fuel efficiency and passenger-preferred experience. Emirates' commitment pushes the total number of new 787 orders and commitments this year to more than 180; and more than 210 orders and commitments for the 787-10 overall.

Boeing has delivered more than 600 787s since deliveries began in 2011. The 787 fleet has flown more than 200 million passengers while saving over 19 billion pounds of fuel, enabling airlines to open more than 170 new nonstop routes around the world.

The 787-10 Dreamliner is 5.5 meters (18 ft) longer than the 787-9 yet shares more than 95% commonality with its smaller sibling. With its unprecedented low fuel use and operating costs, the 787-10 is the most efficient replacement for older twin-aisle jets such as the A330-300.

What's interesting is the delivery of these 787-10s will be for 2022 which a good indicator DWC expansion, EKs switch could be complete by then.

I'm sure EK could have gotten early delivery slots, but the delayed the delivery until the space/infrastructure was ready at DWC

Finally they will have an aircraft below the B77W (360 seats) again and might help to bring back good relation with US to resume or add new flights e.g. to LAX, SEA, BOS, ORD, IAH, DFW...
On the other side it puts more pressure on Airbus as EK might go to an all Boeing fleet if A380 won't be updated.

Hopefully so. I had a feeling that EK might be going on 787-10 anyway. Their interest on Airbus has been lately reduced apart from the A380.

BTW, apart from new First class Suite, wasn't EK supposed to unveil refurbished J and Y classes as well?

EK cannot move to DWC by 2022. It just doesn't make sense.

I've heard rumors of the EK A380 order still in the works, and an order announced tomorrow or day after.

Thanks so much for the update! No huge changes like First class Suites. Business class is pretty much more or less same, the wood paneling is bit darker color though, that has a nicer touch.

I do like the color/designs of new Y-class seats! But I hoped they did some changes with the headrests...they could install 'leaning' headrests like Etihad's 787s so passengers can lean their head on one side to sleep or sth..

The ICE screens are huge as always, but is it just me or they don't seem to have the remote control/secondary screen anymore?!?

The bathroom however looks fantastic! So glad they finally installed a bigger basin...about time!

I also like EY's head rest. Its also installed on their A380 product.

Which planes with the 787-10 replace? And did they finally order the A380?

Sooner, or later this was coming Airbus's way. If I were EK l would also insist on a NEO version before ordering a single extra airframe.

A great article elaborating on the rationale for this decision:

Why did Emirates choose Boeing’s 787-10?

For the first time ever, EK's order wasn't the biggest news from a Dubai Airshow. And it wasn't even FZ's huge order for 200+ planes that stole the show...the award goes to the largest aviation order in history for 430 aircraft!!!

Think Airbus did that intentionally after how they were played during the Dreamliner order?

They should just stop with the A380-hype...honestly.

Good news. Emirates eyes Mozambique route. Just wonder if Maputo is big enough for 777 service. That's probably where the dreamliners will be handy one day.

God knows. Etihad may well not exist in 5 years and they might be over in Midfield by then

Not sure if it's really a good news. Mozambique might not be feasable enough for EK to continue long term, unless they plan to copy QR or something.

I think yes. Emirates has been pretty evil with Airbus. First, they announced publicly their discussions with Airbus for a 20-aircraft order. Then was leaked to the media just a day before the show they are set to order almost the double of the initial number. Then read below what happened in the order unveiling if you haven't.
Anyway, this order would just keep the line open for a (very) few more years, not save the program. That makes me doubt this order will materialize as Airbus will unlikely comply to Emirates' economically unreasonable demands. I even wouldn't be surprised if Emirates cancel part of their remaining order after the latest series of events.

Quote:
Emirates' Boeing 787 Dreamliner deal is a nightmare for Airbus

The press release was printed, the media invited, the first dignitaries began filing into the room. Such was the scene on the first day of the Dubai Air Show, when Airbus had planned to unveil a keenly awaited lifeline for its A380 superjumbos from the aircraft’s biggest fan: Emirates.

Instead: nothing. In fact, worse than nothing.

An initial delay, not unusual at these major signing ceremonies, gave way to confusion. Bewilderment turned to humiliation when a model aircraft was carried into the briefing room and the gray cloth covering it slipped off – revealing the Boeing logo on its tail.

Out of nowhere, the U.S. planemaker suddenly conquered Room 6 on the upper level of the main exhibition hall, with its representatives taking the stage.

Airbus officials who dominated the room on arrival quietly slipped out during the press conference as their rival landed a stinging blow: Emirates committed to buying 40 of Boeing’s 787-10 Dreamliners, representing a staggering US$15.1 billion at list price. That was similar to the order value that Airbus had planned.
