First Qatar Airways Dreamliner on the production line

New pictures have been released showing Qatar Airways’ first Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the assembly line at the aircraft manufacturer’s Everett production plant in Seattle.

US president Barack Obama, on a recent tour of Boeing’s factory, was taken to the 787 production line where Qatar Airways’ newest aircraft-type is currently being put together.

Qatar Airways is the first Middle East customer of the Boeing 787, with 60 aircraft on order, including options.

The Doha-based airline is preparing to take delivery of five 787s during 2012, with the first set to arrive in Qatar this summer.

Qatar Airways will initially fly the aircraft on intra-Gulf routes to provide flight crew with training hours before its 787 goes on static display at the Farnborough Air Show in July and then enter into long-haul commercial service on the Doha – London Heathrow route.

“Just over four years ago, Qatar Airways placed an order for the 60 Dreamliners, so seeing these striking images of the aircraft on the production line gives us great pride as we are only months away from taking delivery of our first 787,” said Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker.

“This magnificent aircraft promises to enhance the travel experience for our passengers through space, comfort and many new interior features exclusive to Qatar Airways.

“We eagerly await the arrival of our first 787 to join our growing fleet of 105 aircraft that includes a mix of Boeing and Airbus passenger and cargo aircraft.”

Later this week at ITB Berlin – the world’s largest travel fair – Qatar Airways will unveil the interiors of its 787 on a newly-designed exhibition stand making its debut at the five-day event.

YYZ bound from Dubai. Emirati pride at its finest. Wish I had the power to allow you 5 daily landings from YYZ. I suppose the younger generations will enjoy that in the future.

Etihad to fly to South America and Vietnam

Etihad Airways is to launch its first service to South America and also add flights to Vietnam.

The moves come as the Abu Dhabi-based carrier is planning another “significant expansion” of its global network over the next 18 months.

Etihad CEO James Hogan said its first flights to South America would start in mid-2013 although he did not reveal the planned destination. The date for the launch of Vietnam flights was also not disclosed.

“This a logical next step for us and will mark the sixth continent we serve and our coming of age as a truly global airline,” said Hogan.

Etihad is also planning to add more frequencies on flights to Asia and Australia. It has already announced that it is increasing capacity on its Heathrow-Abu Dhabi route. [...]

Etihad to launch Sao Paulo route from June 2013

Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways will launch flights to Sao Paulo from June 2013, the carrier’s first South American route, the airline has said.

The daily flights will leave Abu Dhabi at 09.45, arriving in Sao Paulo at 05.55 local time. Return flights will leave at 12.35, arriving in the UAE capital at 08.20.

“Brazil is a logical next step for us and will mark the sixth continent we serve and our coming of age as a truly global airline,” James Hogan, president and CEO of Etihad Airways, said in a statement.

Etihad Airways, which announced its first ever profit in February, is growing its route network as it competes with Dubai’s Emirates and Qatar Airways as all three carriers look to transform the Gulf into a new hub for global aviation. [...]

My experience in Emirates A380 First Class Suites:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sedbQ8UrNss

A superb experience from start to finish, very attentive FAs, and a near empty cabin.

The Emirates Lounge at BKK was nice, but not a huge choice of food tbh, quite disappointed that I had to eat cake for breakfast as the only 'hot' food available was simply not to my liking.

The bar area in Business Class was generally not very well attended, although on such a short flight I guess that's not too surpsiring.

I have never flown with Qatar or Etihad (although I have booked QR in October from LHR all the way to DPS) but I do not understand how either of them get such consistent praise ahead of EK.

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has appointed Mr Remco Althuis as its new General Manager for China.

Remco is an aviation specialist with more than 19 years' experience in sales and revenue management, marketing, e-commerce, and ground operations for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. For the past six years, he has been stationed in Chengdu, Guangzhou and Shanghai, most recently as the Air France-KLM regional manager for eastern China.

Peter Baumgartner, Chief Commercial Officer of Etihad Airways, said that Remco would be a great asset to the airline's fast-growing business in China.

"Remco brings to the role a wealth of industry knowledge, skills and experience from his almost two decades in aviation and a deep understanding of Chinese culture and business practices.
