Qatar Airways named World's Best Airline
Published: 2012/07/13
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...cle/index_html

FARNBOROUGH: Qatar Airways has once again triumphed at the annual Skytrax World Airline Awards, winning three top accolades including the main award of World’s Best Airline for the second year running, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

The Doha-based carrier retained the coveted title of Airline of the Year 2012 and notched up two further awards Best Airline in the Middle East for the seventh consecutive year and the Best Airline Staff Service award in the Middle East.

The winners were announced at an awards ceremony attended by leading figures from the global aviation industry at the Farnborough Air Show, the world’s largest aerospace event taking place in the UK this week.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker hailed the achievements as "fantastic recognition" of all employees at Qatar Airways for the dedication and commitment to their job.

Speaking after receiving the awards, Al Baker said: "I am extremely proud of the adulation given once again by the very people who fly - the travelling public, for their support and faith in Qatar Airways.

"Qatar Airways set out on a mission 15 years ago when we launched to be the world’s best airline and spread the airline s quality brand to all corners of the world.

"Last year we achieved that. Retaining awards is always difficult, but we have managed to do so amid the tough competition which only shows we remain focused in our day to day job of offering passengers what they fully deserve the highest standards of service both in the air and on the ground.

"The achievements further reflect the high standards that we set for ourselves and receiving the awards is fantastic recognition of the hard work and commitment of our staff across the world who help make Qatar Airways the success it is today."

Skytrax Chief Executive Officer Edward Plaisted said: "To win the Airline of the Year award for a second successive year is a remarkable achievement for Qatar Airways, and a clear recognition of the continued efforts by Qatar Airways management and staff to be the world's best airline.

"Qatar Airways should be very proud of this fantastic customer recognition of their service standards, and ranking No 1 in the world at the 2012 Airline of the Year shows that they truly are a favorite airline among today's global travellers."

The Skytrax awards, conducted by the global aviation research organisation, polled over 18 million business and leisure air travellers from more than 100 countries.

Air travellers were surveyed during a 10-month period by telephone, questionnaires and online about their experiences with airlines on the ground and in the air.

The survey measured passenger satisfaction across more than 38 key performance indicators of airline front-line product and service, including check-in, boarding, onboard seat comfort, cabin cleanliness, food, beverages, in-flight entertainment and staff service.

The survey covered more than 200 airlines, from the largest international airlines to smaller domestic carriers. -- BERNAMA

Qatar Airways to Start Doha-Belgrade Flights in September
Bloomberg
Jun 13, 2012 9:07 PM GMT+0800

Qatar Airways will start flights between Doha and Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia, as of September, the Balkan nation’s Civil Aviation Directorate said, after its officials signed a bilateral air-traffic pact.

The accord “is a very modern act that will lead to traffic liberalization between Serbia and Qatar,” the Civil Aviation Directorate said in an e-mail today.

The pact is “similar to open skies agreements we have here in Europe and that means any airlines from Qatar which may want to fly to Belgrade will be granted a license,” said Katarina Andric-Milosavljevic, the spokeswoman for the directorate.

Qantas Un-Australian, says Etihad boss James Hogan
(The Australian/WCARN.com, July 23)

Quote:
Etihad Airways chief executive James Hogan has blasted Qantas for being un-Australian in its campaign to undermine his airline's investment in Virgin Australia and has pledged that the Abu Dhabi-based carrier will never seek to control Virgin.

Melbourne-born Mr Hogan said Qantas's hostile reaction to Etihad's bid to increase its shareholding in Virgin to 10 percent was a ploy to distract from Qantas's own failings.

Etihad yesterday won approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board to lift its stake in Virgin from 5 percent to 10 percent. It is understood it was given the green light because 10 percent was not close to a controlling interest and was lower than the shareholdings of existing foreign shareholders Virgin Group, which has 26 percent, and Air New Zealand, with 19.9 percent.

If AF and LH now utilise A380s to SIN, why do EK not?

In the past I have heard excuses that it would be a waste because most people do the Kangaroo route from Europe and don't need/want an extra stop in Dubai, but really with AF and LH 'potentially' providing stopovers for PAX in CDG/FRA respectively then the time must come surely for EK to start doing the same.

I recently looked at LH A380 LHR-FRA-SIN rtn and the price was a brilliant £470. If EK could match something like that with a stop in DXB then it surely wouldn't matter how many daily A380s BA, QF and SQ have from LHR (which will be at least 7 by this time next year) on the Kangaroo Route, as people would be still use the EK brand.

I admire EK's aggression in the aviation industry, but they do not attack SIN aggressively enough for me. They are too careful for their own good, with 5 777s daily between DXB and SIN (2 at least stopping at CMB enroute) they could whittle that down to 2 A380s daily, and use the 777s to serve latin america in places like LIM or SCL.

Economy looks a little tight on the 787s which is kind of suprising for an airline with Qatar's reputation, but business looks great (for those with the means) as does the economy cabin from an aesthetic standpoint. It might be the best looking airliner flying today in my opinion inside and out, really sharp livery.

Looks like Emirates is on an expansion spree for this coming year, with more A380 services to Europe and Asia, plus added services between DXB and Southeast Asia, and the usual airline swaps. Here are some of the highlights: (source)

- From 10/14: EK switches operational aircraft on its DXB-LAX and DXB-GIG-EZE routings, with the LAX service getting the B777-300ER and the GIG and EZE service getting the B777-200LR.

- From 10/14: EK increases service to KUL with a new flight operating 4x weekly initially from 12/3/12, with a further frequency increase to 5x weekly from 2/4/13, bringing the total number of services to KUL from current 3x daily to 26x weekly. The new flight will be operated with a 3-class A330-200, with the following schedules:

EK344 DXB2145 – 0850+1KUL 332 x367
EK345 KUL1100 – 1430DXB 332 x147

From 2/4/13, EK344 operates from DXB x67, EK345 operates from KUL x17.
