Indeed yes! EY among all of the Gulf States Based-Carriers has the best special liveries.

LHR is a lot shorter hop for them, whereas YYZ is on the other side of the globe.

I think the A346 can fly as far as YYZ... or probably an A345 or B77W would be better.

Yeah, but LHR is a shorter rotation for them. All in all, we are happy as well because YYZ gets a nice B773ER.

Ah ok. That's great then. What do you think, though, is a better aircraft for EY to serve YYZ from AUH: the 77W or 346?

The B773ER probably because it is cheaper to run it.

Ah yes, a twin-engine is more fuel-efficient than a four-engine on many long-haul trips... Unless there are so many passengers that might need a bigger plane to fill them in. And by the way, it seems like EY is focused on YYZ; when will YUL get EY or EK? Plus, it seems like EK, EY, and QR are adding even more flights to Southeast Asia, with QR flying to PNH for the first time via SGN on a 77W.

It looks like the A340-500/600 and the 777 are pretty much interchangeable in the Etihad fleet. The Toronto are now done by a 777 but could also be done, as seen in the past by a A340. The 777 is slightly bigger, that could be the reason why it's now used for the Toronto flights. But the A340 is used on the New York flight where you would expect more passengers. So it could just be scheduling.

Some interesting news had come out recently. According to mr. Al Baker Qatar and Emirates were in talks about a merger. That would have a created an interesting airline if that would have happened.

Qatar CEO Mulled Merger With Emirates Before Oneworld Invitation

Qatar Airways CEO Akbar al Baker, speaking at the Arab Air Carriers Organization annual meeting in Algiers, said he “considered joining Emirates [Airline] to create a mega-carrier” before being invited to join the Oneworld alliance.

Al Baker said the two airlines would have been able to take advantage of “so many synergies,” while operating networks that were at least partially complementary.

“Unfortunately, that dream of mine did not come true, but we then got invited to join Oneworld,” Qatar’s top executive added.

wait, what? A merger between QR and EK? Those are the de facto national carriers of two different countries... Reminds me of what happened with Air France and KLM, British Airways and Iberia, and United and Continental. If that merger did come true, where would the merged airline be based?

It would have most likely turned into something like Air France/KLM. 1 company, 2 airlines and 2 bases.

If it would have become 1 airline based in Dubai or Doha it would have an affect on the growth because of all the bilateral agreements about landing slots. I would have resulted in the cancellation of routes to for example countries as Germany and Canada.

Ouch, so probably it would be a joint airline like AF-KL, but both of them will keep their own bases and aircraft. However, it will have a mutual partnership in terms of codesharing on routes because it will mean there will be a collaboration of services between the two airlines. It will be interesting though to see the development of the joint airline joining oneworld: it will mean DXB will be a mega-hub for the airline alliance.

But that becomes too much speculation, I doubt that the Oneworld airlines would not have agreed to let such a super airline into the alliance.

Oh OK. So is QR the only one heading into oneworld, or what's the story?

The only thing that is actually happening right now is that Qatar Airways has been invited to join OneWorld.

This line from the article says enough:

“Unfortunately, that dream of mine did not come true, but we then got invited to join Oneworld,”
