Etihad announces major expansion

By Anirban Chowdhury, ET Bureau | 19 Sep, 2013, 12.34PM IST

MUMBAI: Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways on Thursday announced plans to expand operations between India and Abu Dhabi, ahead of the closure of its stake buy from Jet Airways, expected by the end of this month or early next.

From November 1, the airline plans to triple the number of seats it now offers between Mumbai-Abu Dhabi and New Delhi-Abu Dhabi, it said.

"Following the recent signing of a new air services agreement between India and the UAE, we now have the opportunity to add significant capacity between the two countries, not only meeting existing demand for trade and tourist travel but also ensuring that we can meet the continued strong growth which is expected between our two countries. The big winners will be our passengers and freight customers and the economies of India and Abu Dhabi." said the airline's chief executive James Hogan.

On April 24, Jet AirwaysBSE 1.57 % announced it would sell 24% stake to the state-owned carrier of UAE for $379 million. The deal was the first one struck after the government last September allowed foreign carriers to pick up stake in India's airlines.

Immediately after, India's civil aviation ministry proposed the number of weekly seats allocated between India and Abu Dhabi be increased to 53,000 seats per week from 13,300 per week now.

The two partners have appointed US consultant Seabury Group to prepare a market study for the next ten years to estimate between India and Abu Dhabi.

Subject to getting final regulatory approvals, Jet's immediate expansion plan includes adding services between Abu Dhabi and eight Indian destinations including Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Chennai and Trivandrum and six new destinations in the country. It also plans to start new flights from India to North America, via Abu Dhabi.

From December 31, Etihad plans to increase daily to double-daily its Abu Dhabi-Mumbai and Abu Dhabi-New Delhi flights. It also plans to use wide-bodied Airbus A340-600 aircraft on one of the daily Abu Dhabi - Mumbai flights, offering.

The carrier also plans to deploy wide-bodied Airbus A330-200 aircraft on one of the daily Abu Dhabi - New Delhi flights, offering Business and Economy Class; and upgrade daily Abu Dhabi - Chennai flights from 136-seat Airbus A320s to new Airbus A321s, seating 174 passengers.

Subject to regulatory approval, Etihad also intends to codeshare on a wide range of flights operated within India by Jet Airways, it said in the statement.

Qatar Airways likely to invest in India's GoAir

Sanjay Singh New Delhi Last Updated: August 12, 2013 | 00:00 IST

Cash-rich Qatar Airways is keen on a tie-up with the country's low-cost carrier GoAir as it does not want to be left behind archrival Etihad in the race for bilateral traffic rights, which provide Gulf carriers access to the huge Indian aviation market.

GoAir is expected to get approval to fly outside India sometime this year gaining access to a substantial share of bilateral traffic rights, a top government official said.

With close to 80,000 more seats per week still available with the government for bilateral traffic rights for Gulf destinations, civil aviation ministry sources said that a good share of these seats could go to GoAir. According to sources, GoAir and Qatar Airways representatives have sounded ministry officials on the issue in informal discussions held at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan.

Kuwait Airways is also interested in the Indian market but Qatar Airways is better placed to strike a deal because of its stronger financial clout and support of Qatar's powerful former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

The government gave away 36,670 seats to Jet Airways recently while Emirates was earlier given 54,200 seats per week and is now seeking another 26,000 seats. Qatar Airways has a mar-ket share of 4.4 per cent in India with bilateral traffic rights of 24,000 seats per week, which it wants enhanced to 72,000 seats a week.

A top government official told Mail Today that Qatar Airways has been promised a better deal after the former Emir had expressed his displeasure to finance minis-ter P. Chidambaram over the Jet-Etihad deal during his visit to Qatar on May 18-19.

Subsequently, Chidambaram wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that Qatar, which is India's energy partner, could be hit if the Jet-Etihad deal is not reviewed.

The government is worried over the fate of massive investment committed by Qatar in India's energy projects. Qatar has committed to reinvest $3 billion each year in India from its crude oil and LNG sales earnings.

Indian airlines and airports fear losing business out to Gulf carriers especially because almost 40 per cent of outbound Indian fliers travel to the western part of the world through the Middle East.

Emirates report record breaking passenger numbers on Glasgow-Dubai route
19 September 2013

Emirates Airlines has continued to break new passenger records, with August passenger numbers on the airlines Glasgow-Dubai route at their highest in the routes history. For the first time more than 40,000 passengers flew on the hugely successful Glasgow-Dubai route in a single month.

The airline carried 40,362 passengers between the two cities in August, an increase of 35 per cent compared to August 2012, bringing an average load factor of 90.4 per cent.

Emirates launched its second daily service between Glasgow and Dubai in June 2012 using a three-class Boeing 777-300. For both of these flights to be reporting load factors of over 90 per cent, just one year after the second flight commenced operating is nothing short of incredible and proves the strength of the high-yielding Glasgow market.

The second daily flight was initially operated by an Airbus A340 but this has already been upgraded to the much larger Boeing 777-300, the same aircraft which operates the afternoon flight.

Last month it was revealed Emirates had planned to temporarily cancel the second-daily flight to Dubai for June and July 2014 due to extensive runway work being carried out at Dubai airport. Due to the Glasgow route’s continued success and growth, Emirates has since revised this and the second daily service will continue to operate as normal, despite the capacity restrictions at Dubai Airport.

Richard Jewsbury, Emirates’ senior vice president for commercial operations in Europe, said: “No-one can be in any doubt that growth remains a key objective for Emirates in Glasgow.”

“We can now connect even more Scottish passengers to our extensive route network, without them having to travel via London or other European airports.”

Emirates have been unveiled as an Official Partner of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and have also acquired the naming rights to the city’s newest sporting venue, which is now known as the Emirates Arena.

Emirates flights from Glasgow to Dubai and beyond can be booked online now at emirates.com.

Not so sure about the marriage thing, but when it comes to pregnancy, I see nothing wrong, considering the laws of the country that considers pregnancies (or sex) out of wedlock, a crime punishable by at least deportation.

I think time has come for Emirates to update the flight crews uniforms. They look dated .... oh, and being at it, toning down a little on the make-up too.

India cabinet approves Etihad's Jet Airways stake deal

Quote:
The Indian government has approved Etihad Airways' plan to buy a 24% stake in Jet Airways for $379m (£248m).

The deal was first announced in April, but proved controversial due to concerns over who would control the day-to-day operations of the airline.

It is the first foreign investment in India's airline sector since ownership restrictions were eased last year.

They could with the 777-200LR.

But this is more profitable as the planes would otherwise just be waiting over at the Australian airports the time they now fly to New Zealand and back. They have 5th freedom rights on those routes, most of the passengers that board in Auckland will have Australia as their destination and not Dubai or beyond.

Upstart Abu Dhabi Airline Becomes Ally to European Carriers

PARIS — Just a few years ago, James Hogan, the chief executive of Etihad Airways, probably would have had trouble scoring a meeting with one of his European counterparts. These days, however, it seems he’s never been so popular.

Don't quote me but I believe prior to the QF/EK Alliance Emirates had intensions to operate the aircraft across the Pacific to the West Coast of USA (LAX, SFO).
