Emirates signs Dubai airport trucking deal

Emirates SkyCargo is gearing up for the move of its freighter fleet to Al Maktoum Airport (DWC) by signing a trucking contract with Dubai-based Allied Transport LLC, an established land transportation services provider within the United Arab Emirates and Gulf Cooperation Council. The five-year contract will see Allied Transport provide road feeder services between Dubai International (DXB) and DWC for Emirates SkyCargo, including the operation of up to a fleet of 45 trucks in the first year.

Starting May 1, Emirates SkyCargo freighters will call Al Maktoum International Airport their new home. The freighters will be handled exclusively from DWC while passenger fleet belly cargo operations will continue to operate from Dubai International Airport. Therefore, the trucking of cargo between the two airports will form a critical part of the new Emirates SkyCargo operation. Dedicated road feeder services between DXB and DWC for connecting cargo will be introduced to maintain the minimum possible transhipment times between freighters and the passenger fleet.

For this year Emirates SkyCargo expects to have approximately 10 trucks per hour running between DWC and DXB during peak times, with frequency to increase over the coming years. The cargo will be moved via purpose-built truck docks at both airports to achieve quick turn-around.

“Emirates SkyCargo’s terminal at DWC, the new home of our entire freighter fleet, is a global cargo terminal with world-class facilities,” said Nabil Sultan, Emirates divisional senior vice president, cargo. “The development progress is well on track and we are ready to start operations soon “Our freighter fleet today already accounts for 35 percent of Emirates SkyCargo’s revenue and the new terminal is at the core of our growth plans. Looking at the bigger picture, the new infrastructure also has a positive multiplier impact on Dubai as it will create a cargo corridor that connects the Jebel Ali port, DWC and Dubai International Airport,” he added.

Upon full completion, the terminal will be equipped to handle 700,000 tonnes per year, with the potential for further expansion to reach 1 million tonnes. The new Emirates SkyCargo terminal will feature state-of-the-art technology, including a fully automated material handling system which is one of the world’s first to have an automated Unit Load Device (ULD) that enables quick transfer of 6 ULDs simultaneously. In addition, an automated pallet handling system, advanced storage system, offices, workstation areas, modern communication and security systems, canteens, and other amenities will be installed. The terminal infrastructure also includes 46 truck docks and 80 truck parking spaces, in addition to 12 aircraft stands directly in front of the terminal.

Emirates SkyCargo currently operates a freighter fleet of 12 aircraft - 10 Boeing 777Fs and two Boeing 747-400ERFs – all of which will move to Dubai World Central Al Maktoum International Airport. Operations at the new cargo terminal will commence with 250 staff, which will be increased to 500 gradually.

Great news!
A low carrier from Al Ain is really needed to serve that population of that city. Destinations to the sub continent could do very well from Al Ain.

Etihad Airways 2013 profit rises 48% as equity alliances pay off

Quote:
Etihad Airways lifted 2013 profits 48 per cent in a year defined by its strategy of adding capacity through equity alliances.

Net profit reached $62 million as sales grew 27 per cent to $6.1 billion. Partnership revenues also rose by 30 per cent to $820m, representing 21 per cent of total passenger revenues.

“Our codeshare partnerships have been an important part of our business performance for the last seven years,” said James Hogan, president and chief executive of Etihad Airways. “But it is our equity investments which are really taking off now, allowing us to build integrated networks and schedules, develop common products and services and most importantly, identify business and cost synergies.”

Etihad Aviation Group unveiled

Quote:
Abu Dhabi, March 3 (IANS/WAM): Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Monday announced the next step in its long-term business strategy, with the creation of the Etihad Aviation Group, a new structure marking its transition from a single entity airline to a wider global aviation group.

The new Etihad Aviation Group structure, headed by James Hogan as group president and chief executive officer, distinguishes the functions relating purely to Etihad Airways and those required to interface with and support the growth and success of its subsidiaries, joint venture companies and equity partners.

"Ten years ago we started life as a small regional carrier, but with global ambitions,” Hogan said while speaking on the occasion.

“Since then we have grown to become one of the world's leading passenger and cargo airlines, and have expanded and diversified our operations outside the core airline business laying the foundations to become one of the leading aviation and travel groups in the world,” he said.

Stating that it was important that this exciting new approach and philosophy was “reflected in the way we organise ourselves,” he said: “The new Etihad Aviation Group structure reflects this diversification and is a natural development to deliver continued and sustainable success for Etihad Airways and its partners."

A new position of chief operating fficer of Etihad Airways has been created to oversee the day-to-day running of the core airline.

Etihad to unveil A380 interior in 8 weeks

UAE flag carrier Etihad Airways is to unveil the much anticipated inside of its new A380 planes at the ATM show in Dubai in May this year, Arabian Business can reveal.
...
“What we will show is something very special, very unique. We have been waiting a long time and developing something that we believe is quite spectacular and different from what you see inside all the other airlines currently flying the A380,” Hogan said.

It is understood that Etihad will also use the annual travel exhibition to showcase for the first time the inside of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The global travel show is taking place on May 5-8 in Dubai.

Looks very nice. I wish they went for an Etihad type suite though. Etihad F suite is simple and not too over the top like EK.

This one looks like the LH first class which also looks fantastic, but I don't like the color scheme of QR's one. It looks quite old fashioned.
The business class looks excellent though! Better than EK but not as generous with space as Singapore Airlines J class.

Not sure if anyone has posted this already but Emirates announced a new non-stop flight to Chicago O' Hare expected to begin August 5th. This means that Chicago is one of the few US cities that are served by three Persian Gulf carriers (alongside NYC, Washington DC, Los Angeles, and Dallas)
