Don't forget Etihad wont have they're first A380 until December so in reality Emirates could beat them to the real thing flying in the air in real life before that.

Also note that Etihad will only have a handful of A380's flying to a small number of destinations where Emirates could have this product flying to ever corner of the Earth with they're huge SJ fleet.

Don't forget it'll take at least 18-24 months to refit the entire EK A380 fleet... QF's A330 J/C program will take close to 24 months to be completed.

Whatever he says, to a common man (like me) this looks like copying!! Bad timing from his part to announce it 1 day after Etihad launched their product!!

If not longer if you ask me. If they do decide to go with the new design I can't see them refitting any of todays flying airframes until they reach they're regular maintenance checks.

Qatar Airways boss rules out following Etihad's A380 first class product

Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker has dismissed any suggestion it would re-think its A380 offering after the launch of rival Etihad's first class residences, saying it was "not a follower".
Speaking at the Arabian Travel Mart event in Dubai, Al Baker revealed the look of its A380 first-class seats, which will be more than 2.2m in length and the widest in the industry, convertible to a fully flat bed, and with a 26-inch television screen, a privacy screen, increased personal storage as well as a facility for two passengers to sit across from each other when dining.
Delivery of its first A380 will be on May 30, he said, while he hoped it would be used on its Doha to Heathrow route from June 17.
It came a day after Etihad launched its ground-breaking First class residences, which will be located in the upper level of the A380 and comprise a living room, separate double bedroom and ensuite shower room and use of a personal butler trained by the Savoy Butler Academy in London.
"I am very glad that Etihad has launched its fantastic product - it shows to everybody that the Gulf carriers are really raising the ante, really raising the bar for other carriers to follow'" Al Baker told reporters on Monday.
"But, you know, Qatar Airways is not a follower, we are a leader and we lead in the product innovation."
He said Qatar Airways was the first airline in the Gulf and second globally, after British Airways, to introduce a horizontal flat seat in First class in 2001, triggering a wave of similar innovation by other airlines. Likewise, with its introduction of the lie-flat business class seat in 2002.
In 2005 Qatar Airways introduced a world-first onboard lounge.
Al Baker said he had to balance up the weight of an aircraft with maximising return on investment and maintained that the demand for First class travel was low.
"At the end of day we operate the most expensive real estate, so I have to make sure that any space I have in the airplane, that I pack the maximum number of passengers, keeping the comfort in mind," he said.
"The space we give you in Qatar Airways first class is the best value for money and at the same time gives you the maximum comfort you require. That is the aim of my mission- to have a product that is world class, five-star and that the passenger pays the correct amount of money for the space they occupy."
Al Baker said he believed the business segment which used to travel, and hold up, First class for most carriers shifted to business class after the 2008 global finance crisis and would not shift back.
He said its first class load factor was 40 percent, adding that fellow one world alliance member British Airways, which has a point to point market primed for first class, would admit its load factor was 60 percent in that class.
"We are here to make profit, we are here to make sure we get a perfect return on investment and this day there is very low demand for first class," he said.

Etihad To Acquire Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies From Mubadala

Quote:
UAE carrier Etihad Airways has signed a deal with state-owned investment fund Mubadala Development Company to acquire aircraft maintenance firm Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies.

The agreement includes engineering and maintenance teams, hangars, paint facilities and component workshops in Abu Dhabi to be used by the company for aircraft maintenance on its growing fleet, including the new Airbus A380 and Boeing B787 set to arrive in the last quarter of 2014.

Mubadala will retain ADAT’s maintenance, overhaul and repair business.

“ADAT has been a vital partner to the UAE national carrier over the past five years. This acquisition will strengthen the maintenance capability of the Etihad Airways group by bringing together critically important functions that go to the heart of ensuring safety and optimal performance of the operations,” said James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ president and CEO.

“This acquisition by Etihad Airways is a true testament to ADAT’s world-class MRO credentials and its exceptional workforce. As part of our development mandate, Mubadala is proud to have cultivated a world-renowned MRO service provider and today’s announcement is a reflection of our mandate to deliver strong social and economic returns to Abu Dhabi and the UAE,” said Homaid Al Shemmari, chief executive officer of Aerospace and Engineering Services at Mubadala.

In addition to the Etihad Airways fleet, ADAT’s maintenance services will also be made available to Etihad Airways’ equity alliance partners and third party customers.

Emirates airlines profit up 43% in 2013 to $887 mn

Dubai (AFP) - Emirates airlines, the largest Middle East carrier, said Thursday it posted a 43 percent surge in profit to $887 million last year as fuel costs dropped and passenger numbers rose.

Net profit in 2013 hit 3.3 billion dirhams ($887 million) compared to 2.3 billion dirhams ($622 million) the previous year, the company announced.

AFPEmirates airlines profit up 43% in 2013 to $887 mn
Dubai (AFP) - Emirates airlines, the largest Middle East carrier, said Thursday it posted a 43 percent surge in profit to $887 million last year as fuel costs dropped and passenger numbers rose.

Net profit in 2013 hit 3.3 billion dirhams ($887 million) compared to 2.3 billion dirhams ($622 million) the previous year, the company announced.

Fuel costs dropped by around four percent, Emirates chief Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum told reporters, while passenger numbers increased 13 percent.

The carrier's revenues increased 13 percent to 82.6 billion dirhams ($22.5 billion).

"It has been a good year," sheikh Ahmed said.

The government-owned carrier transported a record 44.5 million passengers last year, compared to 39.4 million the previous year.

Emirates Group as a whole, which includes Dnata travel services, saw revenues rise 13.2 percent to 87.8 billion dirhams ($23.9 billion), with profit surging 31.6 percent to 4.1 billion dirhams ($1.1 billion).

The group will give a dividend of one billion dirhams ($280 million) to its indebted government "similar to the last financial year," it said.

"We are moving into the new financial year with confidence and a strong foundation for continued profitability with our strong balance sheet, solid global portfolio and international talent pool," sheikh Ahmed said in a company's statement.

He said the carrier employed 52,512 people, 10 percent up from the previous year.

He also said the group as a whole invested the equivalent of $6 billion last year to upgrade services, including new aircraft and facilities.

"Every dirham invested has been carefully considered against short and long-term goals, be it enhancing our capabilities, improving our product, or expanding our business footprint," he said.

Emirates market in East Asia and Australasia remained its highest revenue contributor, with $6.5 billion, 14 percent up from last year.

The Dubai-based airline leads Gulf major carriers in expanding their share on the route between the West and Asia and Australasia, triggering repeated complaints from legacy carriers which complain over a tough competition with the state-owned airlines.

Emirates, Qatar Airways and Abu Dhabi's Etihad have become popular carriers among travellers along these routes, turning their cities into major travel hubs.

The carrier operates from Dubai International Airport, the Middle East's busiest airport which has shot up to rank as the world's second largest airport for international travel after handling 66.4 million passengers in 2013.

But Emirates has said it forecast a revenue drop of around one billion dirhams this year due to a three-month closure of one of the airport's two runways until the end of July for upgrade.

Emirates fleet also increased to 217 planes from 197 in 2012-2013.
