Alitalia’s Board Agrees to Cash Infusion From Etihad of Abu Dhabi

Quote:
Facing the prospect of bankruptcy for the second time in five years, the board of Italy’s troubled flagship airline, Alitalia, agreed on Friday to a strategic partnership that would give a stake of up to 49 percent to the state-owned Abu Dhabi carrier Etihad Airways.

With no other viable alternative, and the company’s cash reserves dwindling, Alitalia’s chief executive, Gabriele Del Torchio, told reporters in Rome that the board had voted in favor of Etihad’s offer. Italy’s transport minister has said the offer includes up to 1.25 billion euros ($1.6 billion) in new investments in Alitalia over the next four years.

Mr. Del Torchio told the Italian Senate this week that Etihad’s proposal included an initial investment of around €560 million in exchange for a write-down of several hundred million euros in debt and the elimination of around 2,200 jobs, or 15 percent of Alitalia’s work force.

Negotiations with Alitalia’s main creditor banks over how to restructure about €700 million in debt were expected to continue for a few more weeks, Mr. Del Torchio said. “We are proceeding, but you must understand that the sums are not small,” Mr. Del Torchio said. “We’re still working on it.”

According to reports, loss making Malaysian Airlines who has been in the process of drawing up a new business plan has met with Etihad in the last few weeks which could see the carriers initially form a comprehensive codeshare partnership, with an equity stake possible down the road.

The MH370 disappearance and subsequent traffic loss has added urgency to the carriers studies aimed at adjusting its strategy and deliver a business plan that would bring the carrier back to profitability within two years and create foundation for it to survive for the long term in the competitive Southeast Asian marketplace.
It believed a shrunken MAS with strong partnerships could be keys to the airlines successful future.

Ultimately any strategy will need to be blessed by the Malaysian government, which still owns the majority stake in the carrier.

Well the Etihad portfolio does look empty in Asia, so suppose this might be a whole Mr. Hogan could fill.

For MAS however it will need to make some very tough decisions regardless. Its financial performance and viability was in question way before MH370. EY wont overnight reverse such fundamental structural handicaps.

Etihad itself does extremely well on Asian routes...Besides Asian countries have mostly had an open sky policy with UAE. As a result they have not been required to tie-up with an airline there....Also the airlines based in the far-east have been forced to leave Abu Dhabi over time as there is not much point-point demand (for what is left, the Abu Dhabi passengers use Dubai airport)!!

Other than their not so secret any more aim of world domination (for Etihad), I see no other reason for this codeshare!!

Note that in the image, it has a French registration since it was being tested at the time it was taken.

Emirates A380 lands in Vienna
Taken at Vienna International Airport, Austria
In May 2014, Emirates operated a one-off A380 to Vienna to mark its 10-year anniversary and continued commitment to Austria. It was the first ever commercially scheduled A380 service to Vienna International Airport. This important milestone was witnessed by many plane spotters, and here are some of their best photos taken on the day.

Definitely the best liveried C-17 Globemaster I've ever seen. Although its interior quality is.....well, it's a military transport aircraft anyway.

I was wondering how would it look like if F-16 is painted in Emirates or Etihad livery?

Etihad to Buy 49% Stake in Alitalia to Expand Global Reach

Quote:
Alitalia SpA and Etihad Airways PJSC agreed the terms of a stake purchase giving the Middle Eastern airline 49 percent of the unprofitable Italian carrier and access to one of Europe’s biggest travel markets.

The two airlines will complete final documents, they said today. Etihad will invest about 560 million euros ($762 million) and create a company for Alitalia’s operating assets, said two people familiar with the matter. The carrier will pay about 400 million euros for the stake and will also buy a majority in the company that runs Alitalia loyalty program, said the people, who asked not to be named as the talks is private.

“It’s clearer and clearer that this marriage has to be done as it is an important industrial investment,” Italian Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said in a statement. “We will meet unions to discuss job cuts.”

Etihad Airways fleet notches up 100th aircraft

Quote:
Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi carrier, has received its 100th aircraft a little more than 10 years after it first started operating.

Aircraft number 100 was a new Airbus A321-231, which was also joined by the 101st - an Airbus A320-200.

“This is an important day for an airline which launched operations just over 10 years ago,” said James Hogan, the president and chief executive of Etihad.

“Etihad Airways continues to grow, to prosper and to lead the way in innovation and service. Today, we fly the most technologically advanced and fuel efficient aircraft available, setting new standards in comfort and reliability.”

A statement from Etihad said that both aircraft are equipped with sharklets, which are blended winglets at each wingtip, designed to enhance the payload-range performance, allowing a significant reduction in fuel-burn.

Etihad offers more flights to Indian cities in growth plan

Quote:
Etihad Airways will provide travellers with even more connections between India, the UAE and other key markets around the world, following a major service upgrade to Kochi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kozhikode and Hyderabad this summer.

Due to strong demand from business and leisure travellers, a double-daily frequency will be operated to Bangalore, Chennai and Kozhikode from Tuesday, and Hyderabad from October 1. As a result, guests have the option of daytime or overnight flights, and improved connections between India and key markets in the GCC, Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America.

Double-daily frequencies were also introduced to Kochi route last month, as well as Mumbai and New Delhi in November 2013, supporting a long-term development plan in India.

The airline will utilise new Airbus A320s, scheduled for delivery this year, to accommodate much of the increased frequencies. Larger wide-body aircraft were also introduced on selected routes in November 2013, with a three-class A340 on overnight Mumbai flights, marking the debut of Etihad Airways’ First Class product on the route, and A330s on overnight Delhi flights.

Kochi flights have also been upgraded with the recent introduction of new Airbus A321 aircraft, while overnight Delhi flights will be further enhanced with three-class Boeing 777 from July 15.

In addition to the seven existing or planned double-daily services, Etihad Airways operates daily to Ahmedabad, Trivandrum and most recently, Jaipur, where flights commenced in April 2014.

James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said: “As one of the largest, fastest-growing and most exciting travel markets in the world, India continues to play an important role in our growth plans. Last year alone, more than 885,000 people flew on our Indian services, a substantial increase of 20 per cent on the previous year.

“Subject to regulatory approvals, we will continue to expand our India operations and work with Jet Airways to accommodate strong growth and deliver much greater choice for travel to and from India.”

Last month, Etihad Airways also announced a significant expansion of its codeshare agreement with Jet Airways, after the two airlines obtained regulatory approval to codeshare on 43 additional routes, bringing the total number of services in their codeshare agreement to 71.
