Etihad unveils new airline umbrella group

Quote:

[IMG][/IMG]

Etihad Airways on Wednesday unveiled Etihad Airways Partners, a new brand which brings together its equity partner airlines to offer customers more choice through improved networks and schedules and enhanced frequent flyer benefits.

Initially, six airlines will participate in the new partnership - Air Berlin, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, India’s Jet Airways, Darwin Airline, and Etihad Airways.
However, any airline can become an Etihad Airways Partner even if it is part of an existing alliance, such as Air Berlin, which is a member of Oneworld, the Abu Dhabi-based airline said in a statement.

James Hogan, president and CEO of Etihad Airways, said: “We are broadening our business model to articulate and define a partner proposition for like-minded airlines which will result in synergies and efficiencies for participating airlines on the one side, and enhanced network choice, service and frequent flyer benefits for the consumer on the other.

“The Etihad Airways Partners logo is a seal of excellence and global cooperation. It will be displayed on aircraft and on branded materials by a group of airlines working together to connect travellers around the world, and increasingly to harmonise standards in the air and on the ground.”
Hogan said Etihad Airways Partners differed from legacy airline alliances by offering benefits well beyond pure commercial cooperation.

Etihad hires senior exec to manage push for equity partners

Quote:

Etihad Airways said on Tuesday it has appointed a senior executive to manage its growing number of equity partnerships with other airlines.

The national airline of the UAE announced the appointment of Bruno Matheu to the new position of chief operating officer equity partners in the Etihad Airways Aviation Group.

Matheu joins Etihad Airways after two decades at Air France-KLM. He most recently served as chief long haul officer at Air France and previously worked in executive roles across the airline’s commercial, network, marketing and revenue management operations, Etihad said in a statement.

Etihad Q3 revenue up 29% to $1.8bn

Quote:
UAE national carrier Etihad Airways has reported a 29 percent increase in third-quarter revenues to $1.8 billion.

The Abu Dhabi-based airline said it carried 3.9 million passengers between July and September, up 30 percent year-on-year, as its passenger carrying capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK), rose 16 percent to 22 billion by the end of Q3.

Codeshare and equity partnerships accounted for an estimated 1.1 million passengers, 41 percent more than the same period last year, and contributing about $352 million to revenue, representing 27 percent of the airline’s passenger revenue.

Etihad received three additional aircraft during the quarter, taking its fleet to 105, and launched flights to Yerevan, Paris and Rome. It said the growth in passenger demand and revenue during the three month period outstripped capacity increase.

Etihad Cargo also achieved 16 percent growth in revenue for the quarter, outperforming the global market.

The business carried 144,498 tonnes of freight and mail during the third quarter, a year-on-year increase of nine percent, Etihad said.

The airline is expected to record its strongest ever annual results.

That's revenue not profit.

Lufthansa to drop services to Abu Dhabi

FRANKFURT: German airline Lufthansa announced on Thursday (Oct 16) that it will pull the plug on its once-daily flights between Frankfurt and Abu Dhabi due to competition from its Gulf rival Etihad.

"Substantial capacity has arisen in recent years on services between Germany and the United Arab Emirates because state-subsidised Gulf carriers have massively increased their presence," Lufthansa complained in a statement.

"This development has been further exacerbated by the fact that Etihad Airways has unfairly been allowed to offer and market code-sharing flights with Air Berlin," the German airline continued.

"In face of huge over-capacity, the service between Frankfurt and Abu Dhabi has become increasingly uneconomical for us. We are now taking the consequences and will drop the service from our timetable starting from summer 2015," Lufthansa said.

The carrier complained that the unfair competition from state-subsidised airlines in the Gulf region puts jobs at risk in the German airline sector.

in other news outlets, it is reported that negotiations between the UAE and Germany concerning the aviation bilateral agreement are scheduled for October 20,2014
http://www.airliners.de/lba-air-berl...sharings/33876
(in German)

This against the background that two opposing points of view are currently jostling to influence German aviation policy after the investment by Etihad into the struggling German airline Air Berlin:
Lufthansa and supporters wish to limit further influence of Gulf carriers in its home market while Air Berlin and supporters point to the preservation of German jobs, at Air Berlin, whose financial woes would have been even greater without EY's investment.
Will be interesting to see this develop.

For the record, the current UAE-German bilateral allows EK and EY unlimited capacity into the three airports MUC DUS and FRA - theoretically, they could both send an A 380 to each airport every hour. Only EK has a special exemption to operate to HAM in addition.

Wow... that's interesting that EK and EY have unlimited capacity to three of Germany's major airports. I hope other nations that want to fly to Germany will have the same benefits as what UAE enjoys. However, the question lies: how will LH and AB be impacted by such a move?

Actually, a lot of people would use such once-weekly flights since it allows the airline to gauge a route's potential before mounting additional frequencies on low-density routes to begin with. Not to mention, those cities are viewed as secondary cities (Tblisi, however, is the capital of Georgia, yet it receives not as many flights as its neighbors in Kiev and Moscow), in which low frequencies are allocated so that those cities can get direct access to larger airports in the Middle East and beyond.

Interestingly, kinda found what I had in my mind. EK operates to HAM, while on the other hand, QR operates to TXL but not DUS, kind of strange seeing as DUS is the 3rd largest/busiest airport in DE.
Being a Hamburg resident, although I am satisfied that EK operates here 2x daily, I would definitely like it if QR operates to HAM as well. At least then I would have 2 options when going somewhere far. I wonder why QR doesn't operate to HAM or DUS yet, in another news I have seen that HAM airport authorities even approached QR to operate flights to HAM.

That would be truly awesome! Any initial details on its schedules or aircraft? And will there be any codesharing involved on that flight and connecting flights from both HAM and AUH?

your source? I wouldn't still be happy, AB's in-flight service is nowhere near EY so I would have to keep using EK from HAM unless EY or QR operates here.
