I was reading the discussion in the "classical thread" about the best route from Barcelona to Bilbao and was wondering how many passengers actually use intermediate stations instead of going "end to end" on those routes. Is that kind of statistics known for any of the major HS lines? For example out of all trips on Barcelona-Madrid line how many start or end in one of the intermediate stations?

Yes, it is known, more or less.

For instance, on the Alvia Barcelona-Corunna/Vigo, very little people do the end to end trip, the majority using intermediate stops.

In fact, it is possible that no passengers make corner-to-corner journey, all of them with intermediate stops

Of course but that depends a lot on how long an end to end journey is. I assume Barcelona-Madrid is 60-70% end to end.

How long would Malaga-London take? Lots of people would use intermediate stretches, like Malaga-Madrid, Madrid-Barcelona, Barcelona-Gerona, Perpignan-Lyon, Lyon-Paris, Paris-Calais or Dover-London... but what would it take to stay on one train and seat all the way?

15 or 16 hours at least... Maybe more

It could be affordable only if you are carrying a great deal of baggage that doesn't worth to pay in a flight

Well, Málaga-Madrid-Barcelona would take 5 hours; Barcelona-Paris (in 2020?) 5 hours too; Paris-London 2.15 h
A total of +- 12 hours.

It would take a service that doesn't currently exist.

Such a service doesn't really make much sense…

I wonder what is currently the longest daytime (no sleepers) service in Europe. From Switzerland one of the longest is Zurich-Hamburg EC at 10:27. The same service with ICE is 7:41. Numbers in Spain are probably similar.

Barcelona-La Coruña (day service) 12:52. I knew it when 16:00 (departure at 7:00 or so and arrival at 23:00 in both sides). My mother used it when took much more than one day when she was young.

Barcelona-Seville (day service via Valencia and always on classic line) 11:21
This train was a former Barcelona-Seville/Malaga/Badajoz/Granada/Almeria. Almeria and Granada only one day out of two. Today it has links to all those cities but direct train is a newer one and only through Seville

(longest than a Zurich-Hamburg, indeed)

Barcelona-Paris will still take more than 5 hours by 2020, assuming that the TGVs are authorized to more than 200km/h between Barcelona and Perpignan and that the section between Nimes and Montpellier of the HSL would be open by then. Now it´s 6h25min at best.

I assume that Barcelona-Paris under 4 hours would only be possible once the missing section of the HSL, between Montpellier and Perpignan, would open.

And that would also be subject to a further (and important) reduction in travel time if the POCL HSL (the one between Paris and Lyon via Roanne and Nevers) was built allowing speeds up to 360 km/h. If that were the case, Barcelona-Paris would then become dangerously busy (and trains like Barcelona-London, Barcelona-Brussels, Barcelona-Amsterdam or even Barcelona-Manchester if HS2 was open by then, would then be perfectly feasible with an attractive travel time).

But all of this goes for well beyond 2020...

I see some sections with "triple track". Are there long stretches with the new and old line running in parallel?

Only the approach to Zamora, between Coreses and Zamora stations on the classic line.

The rest of the HSL follows a totally different route.

This is Spain....

one out of two 22 km tunnels between Leon and Oviedo has "water" inside and no solution offered.

Open this news and click on first video. No wonder if you do not speak Spanish, no language required to understand the problem...

We´ve already discussed the problem in the Pajares tunnels in other posts of this thread, and I think you´re taking things way over the top.
This is an info from a newspaper, not anything coming from an official source, so its credibility is yet to be confirmed.
