CLP power India to invest Rs 18 billion in wind energy

According to reports, with a decline in European markets, many renewable energy producers are looking towards India as an investment hub. CLP Power India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CLP Holdings Ltd, plans to invest around Rs 1,800 crore in India to add over 200 MW capacity in wind energy in the fiscal year 2012-13.

“The company has delivered over 200 MW power last fiscal year, through its wind power projects existing in six states, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh,” said Mahesh Makhija, director, business development, CLP India. “This year we plan to invest over Rs 1,500-1,800 crore to generate another 200 MW.”

Capacity enhancement would be through new projects and the investment would be from debt and equity, he added. However, the company’s total investment in India is over Rs 12,500 crore.

According to the ministry of new and renewables energy, India has wind potential of 65,000 MW. Today, with 12,809 MW of installed capacity, country is one of the leading nations for wind power.

“More than two-thirds of India’s power from renewable energy comes from wind farms peppered across the country’s southern and western states,” said Makhija.

The company is also evaluating options to set up a solar power plant.

“It is in the preliminary stage and we are monitoring the solar energy resources in Rajasthan,” Makhija said.

French group Areva to build big Indian solar power plant

Quote:
PARIS — The French energy group Areva said Wednesday that it would build the biggest concentrated solar power installation in Asia for Reliance Power of India.
Areva Solar is to construct two plants using compact linear fresnel reflector (CLFR) technology that would produce 250 megawatts (MW) of electricity in Rajasthan, northwestern India, a statement said.
That would provide energy for around 300,000 people in Europe according to a sector estimation.
CLFR technology uses reflected sunlight to heat liquid-filled tubes which generate high-pressure steam that produces electricity via turbines.
Financial details were not disclosed, but the statement said the installation "will become the largest in all of Asia" and would contribute to an Indian goal of adding 20,000 MW of solar energy capacity by 2022.
The project, which has already begun its first phase would represent a reduction of around 557,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually compared with a coal-fired plant, Areva added.
It set a target date of May 2013 for the operational launch of the first plant.

India continued its ascent as a top destination for private clean energy investment, according to a research report released by The Pew Charitable Trusts, a non-profit organisation.

The country’s ‘National Solar Mission,’ with a goal to have 20 GW of solar power installed by 2020, helped drive the seven-fold jump in solar energy investments to $4.2 billion, the report said. India received $4.6 billion and an additional 2.8 GW of capacity was installed over the course of the year. India now has 22.4 gigawatts of installed clean energy generating capacity.

According to the report, India’s clean energy sector continued to flourish in 2011, with private investment increasing 54 per cent to $10.2 billion, placing the country at sixth position among the G-20 nations. This was the second highest growth rate among the G-20 nations.

Globally, investment grew to a record $263 billion in 2011, a 6.5 per cent increase over the previous year. The US reclaimed the top spot among all G-20 nations and attracted $48 billion.

However, with $45.5 billion in private investments, China continued to be a hub of clean energy activity — leading the world in wind energy investment and deployment as well as wind and solar manufacturing.

Germany received $30.6 billion, ranking third among G-20 nations. The combination of falling prices and growing investments accelerated installation of clean energy generating capacity by a record 83.5 GW in 2011 bringing the total to 565 GW globally. This represents almost 50 per cent more than installed nuclear power capacity.

Hi guys,
I have noticed empty spaces between wind mills. Is it possible to utilize that space to place solar panels, so that the project would become a hybrid source of power. Is there any technical problem in doing this?

Not sure what the exact spacing is between windmills, but you do need space for maintenance trucks & workers to be able to come to the windmills - especially if you have to replace one of the blades etc.

Even the photos of that giant solar panel farm puzzles me. Not sure how you would get to the centre if you need to replace a panel.

it may look like that there is no space between the panels due to the angle of the picture. but the fact is there is plenty of space even for a JCB to pass through

10 MW Solar Project of Bosch in India

Energy is very much important in a developing country and it is very good to note that India is doing great when it comes to utilizing solar energy. A global supplier of technology and services Bosch is looking forward for a 10 mega watt worth of projects for the next few years in India.

This is really good news, not only for the government in India, but also for the people. While giving a lot of advantages in companies, it would also provide a good number of job opportunities to people.

According to the sales director of Solar Energy Division Venugopalan C M, they are in constant communication with the private companies in order to provide a 10 MW project in places like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Karnataka.

With this good news with regards to solar energy in India, it is clear that there will be a lot of opportunities in the country. This solar energy will play a key role in the further development and progress of the country.

Asia's largest solar park functional in Gujarat state

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Asia's largest solar park covering 3,000 acres in the Rann of Kutch. The park will lead to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions to the tune of eight million tonnes and save 900,000 tonnes of natural gas annually.

A 600 MW solar power park, touted as Asia's largest, was dedicated to the nation on Thursday by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the state's Patan district. The park will be a boost to India's efforts towards low carbon growth.

The solar power park with a power generation capacity of 600 MW, covering approximately 3,000 acres of wasteland bordering the Rann of Kutch, will generate two-thirds of India's total 900 MW of solar power production.

"Gujarat dedicates 600 MW of solar power to the nation today (Thursday)," Modi said on micro blogging site twitter. “We are celebrating the launch of Agni V & dedication of 600 MW solar power park in Gujarat." According to the Gujarat government, the solar project will lead to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions to the tune of eight million tones and save 900,000 tones of natural gas annually.

Under its Solar Power Policy, the state government had signed memorandums of understanding for generation of 968.5 MW of solar power by the end of this year.

Other projects will be developed at Anand, Banaskantha, Jamnangar, Junagadh, Kutch, Porbandar, Rajkot, Surat and Surendranagar.

The Gujarat Solar Park is an innovative concept of the state government to promote solar installations in which it allocated developed land to the project developers with the entire infrastructure, including power evacuation, roads and water for commissioning of the power project put on fast track.

Gujarat will also host the 'India Solar Summit 2012: Investment and Technology Expo' in Gandhinagar April 20 and 21.

Chennai readies to give country its solar atlas

SRAC director G.Giridhar explains recording the data of solar radiation across the country with a nerve center in Chennai. — DC

Quote:
Chennai is readying to give India its solar atlas, which will have details on radiation of solar energy in various cities in the country.

A team of experts set up by the ministry of new and renewable energy are sitting in Chennai and updating the data of radiation of solar energy in 50 existing automatic solar radiation monitoring centers, including seven in Tamil Nadu, starting from Ladhak in Kashmir to Chitradurga in Karnataka. Sixty more data centres would be set up shortly.

The data in the atlas would be useful for both the government and commercial investors, who could learn about the potential solar zones in India and come up with specific projects to tap the energy, says G. Giridhar, director of the solar radiation assessment cell in Chennai.

The ministry is finalising the proposal to sell the solar data to corporates who would like to set up renewable energy business houses such as solar farms in India.

“The ministry aims to produce 20,000 mega watt of electricity through renewable energy sources in 2020.

This solar census project has the ground data about 32 weather parameters, including humidity, ambient temperature. This is the first of its kind of its project in the world to use solar spots to assess the potential zones,” Giridhar said.

The automatic centers in the country would feed the data collected from all the centers to the server in Chennai, he said.

“Using GPS we update 32 weather parameters including humidity, ambient temperature and radiation. At the click of the mouse, the Chennai office provides the graphs of solar radiation in all major cities,” he said.

The five-year project, which started in 2011, has been coordinated by TEDA (Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency), TNEB (Tamil Nadu Electricity Board) and the renewable energy ministry.

Seeing progress of Gujarat under Narendra Modi(NaMo) in all fields, i tend to feel like calling NaMo a true visionary leader who deserves not any other position than PM of this Great Nation.

Congrats NaMo for dedicating 600Mw Solar Power Plant to the Nation.
