Water project trial run put off
TIRUNELVELI, December 14, 2011 ![]() Tardy:Work on laying main drinking water pipeline under way at Aaraikulam near Palayamkottai on Tuesday. Commissioning of the much-awaited drinking water project under implementation on an outlay of Rs. 17.50 crore for wards 19, 26 and 27 here has been put off to January-end due to delay in getting permission from the Southern Railway as a tunnel had to be dug under a rail track at Aaraikulam near here for laying the main pipeline. As the main pipeline that will carry drinking water from the infiltration wells sunk at Suththamalli has to be laid beneath the rail track crossing Aaraikulam, the Corporation had to obtain permission from the Southern Railway for making a 66-metre long hole with one metre dia. When the Southern Railway asked the urban civic body to pay Rs. 43.70 lakh, the corporation administration negotiated with the Government of India enterprise to the maximum possible extent to bring down the amount to be paid but in vain. After the amount was paid recently, work on laying the pipeline below the rail track was going on since December 9 using trenchless technology, a kind of subsurface construction technique that is used for installation of new or replacement or rehabilitation of existing underground infrastructure with minimal disruption to surface traffic, business and other activities. The work, being executed at an expenditure of Rs. 60 lakh, is likely to be completed by the end of December. The delay caused due to the negotiation between the Corporation and the Southern Railway has ultimately affected completion of the project and consequently, the delay has consumed 45 more days, sources said. “Perhaps, we may be in a position to have the trial run of this massive drinking water project before January-end,” said a top corporation official. |

The Tamil Nadu Government is engaged in implementing various infrastructure schemes under the public-private partnership model to promote Tamil Nadu as an international tourist destination. Infrastructure development includes improving roads and connectivity and providing basic facilities across the State. The State Tourism Department is also keen to impart soft skills to the local community to make a livelihood through tourism.
Tamil Nadu ranks No. 2 in India (after Maharashtra) in attracting foreign tourists and No. 3 in domestic tourism (after Tirumala and Agra), says Mr V. K. Jeyakodi, Principal Secretary to Government, Tourism and Culture Department, Tamil Nadu Government. The tourism industry in Tamil Nadu has been growing at 10-12 per cent every year. Last year, the State attracted 28 lakh foreign tourists and 10 crore domestic tourists. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) raked a total business of Rs 100 crore last year. TTDC today operates 53 hotels, nine boat houses and 25 luxury buses across the State. Tamil Nadu is keen to promote eco-tourism, rural and heritage tourism, says Mr Jeyakodi. “We are promoting Kolli Hills as an eco-tourism paradise, to decongest Ooty and Kodaikanal. Yelagiri, Mudumalai and Yercaud also offer eco-tourism potential,” says Mr Jeyakodi. In co-ordination with the forest department, the State is also trying to popularise Kalakkad and Mundanthurai tiger reserve (in Tirunelveli) among eco tourists. ===English Version===
Complaint boxes in place to tackle eve teasing... Commissioner of Police Karuna Sagar handed over sixteen ‘Complaint Boxes' to the representatives of various educational institutions here on Wednesday with the assurance that complaints to be received from the students, particularly from girl students, would be attended within the shortest possible time to find effective solution. The ‘Complaint Boxes' which are to be installed at various places including schools, colleges, super markets, restaurants etc., have been given to the educational institutions following the tragic killing of S. Mymoon Sharmila on December 6 allegedly by a medical college student M. Monesh Rajer . It was said that the culprit had been teasing the girl for the past two years and on December 6, he mowed her down with his car. Since the police have revived the already installed 30 ‘defunct complaint boxes', the total number of ‘Complaint Boxes' within the city has risen to 46. “Students can write down their complaints pertaining to teasing, ragging, sexual harassment etc. without any hesitation and drop it in these boxes without their names. The Police Inspectors concerned will collect these complaints once a week and take appropriate action. The action taken on the grievances will be reviewed by me every month. Hence, I appeal to the students, particularly the girls, to share their problems with us and we will help them by concealing their identity,” Mr. Karuna Sagar said while handing over the ‘Complaint Boxes'. The Commissioner of Police also appealed to the students to either call him (on 94440 92920) or the Police Control Room (100) in case of any emergency. “Our ultimate goal is to make this city a better place for peaceful living,” he said. Teachers while receiving the ‘Complaint Boxes' said the police should thoroughly investigate the complaints against the teachers, if any, before taking further action. “Since the students can also use this facility against the teachers known for their firm approach towards naughty pupils, genuineness of those complaints should be verified meticulously before arriving at any conclusion or taking action,” the teachers appealed.

Tirunelveli corporation takes the cyber route.. Mayor Vijila Sathyananth on Wednesday formally inaugurated the Public Service Centre, a fully computerised module established in the first floor of the existing administrative building, to receive grievances from the public, record and forward it to the officials concerned for early and appropriate action. The Public Service Centre will function on all days round-the-clock. Through the toll-free number 1800 425 4656, the aggrieved residents can register their complaints with the Public Service Centre, which will immediately forward the complaint to the nodal and the official concerned for immediate action even as a printer connected to the computer will generate three copies of the complaint for sending the hard copies also to the officials. The complaints will also be registered in the zonal office concerned. Moreover, a Short Message Service regarding complaints on erratic drinking water supply, accumulating garbage, blocks in underground drainage system, anti-mosquito operations, streetlights, stray cattle, issuing of birth and death certificates, building plan approvals, unclean public toilets, payment of taxes payable to the corporation etc., will also land in the mobile phones of these officials. “Hence, the officials can never say that they have not received any complaint,” said the technocrats manning the Public Service Centre. On the registration of the complaint, the complainant will receive a reference number with which he can easily track it in future and know the status of the grievance . Above all, the nature of action taken on the complaint will be forwarded to him through his mobile phone. If the complainant is not satisfied with the quality of the remedial measure, the grievance will be kept pending for further action. In an attempt to fine-tune this service, Ms. Vijila Sathyanand and Commissioner Ajay Yadav will supervise its functioning directly and the complainants can directly speak to the Mayor and the Commissioner on contacting this service centre. Another remarkable feature of this system is that those who want to pay the tax arrears can call this centre and express the same. Immediately, the bill collector concerned will be sent to meet the caller with a hand-held gadget to collect the money. Since, the bill collector can hitherto give only the receipt with hand-held gadget for tax collected, the corporation has upgraded this equipment with new software so that the official can also issue the ‘demand note', collect the tax and give receipt on the spot.

Earlier Nagarcoil/Kanniyakumari were used as dumping yard. Now started to invade Tirunelveli junction also. Tirunelveli will also face the same fate if not wake up atleast now.
