VELLORE: The Gudiyattam Taluk Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Society is all set togo high-tech as it becomes the first society in the district to provide solar dryer facility to its members for converting coconuts into value-added copra. The Rs 5.89 lakh facility is funded by a grant from National Agricultural Development Agency.

According to the Joint Registrar of Societies J Malarvizhi, the new venture wo-uld be ready by March-end and is expected to help coconut farmers to get better price if they added value by converting the nuts into copra. There are more than 10,000 farmers cultivating coconut in the region and of them over 6,700 are members of the society.

Since the price of coconut in the open market is subjected to vagaries, most often decided by the middlemen and the traders, the farmers were not able to get good price for their produce.

The solar drying unit would empower them with better marketability as the price of copra is fixed by the state government under the Price Supporter Scheme, she added.

Besides Gudiyattam, 12 other locations across the state including Theni, Tiru-nelveli, Krishnagiri, Dindi-gul, Erode, Madurai, Coimbatore and Tirupur where the NADP is funding similar solar dryer units through the respective Cooperative Marketing Societies, are expected to benefit.

Interestingly, the Gudiyattam society started in 1983 and has been since functioning on a self-sustaining basis. The farmers attached to the society have been innovative and willing to explore new avenues.

Natarajan, secretary of the society, said that the members were impressed by the idea of solar dryer when they had visited a couple of units in private farms in Tirupur last year.

The advantage of using a solar dryer is that it ensures uniform heating (55 to 60 degrees Celsius) both during day and night hours with controlled humidity, fully protected from dust, rains and other damages, and ensures cost cutting on labour. On an average it took around 48 hours for a batch of 4,000 pieces of nuts to get converted into copra, he added.

The society has proposed to procure around 10,000 coconuts per week from the farmers directly.

The price paid to the farmers would be more than the prevailing market rate so that it helps them economically. The farmers have the option to take back copra after paying the society the service charges.

Some of the farmers in Gudiyattam, while hailing the initiative taken by the cooperative society, underlined the need for transport facility to take the coconut to the solar dryer unit from their farms. Some farmers could be provided with loan facilities to purchase tractors with trailers, which could be used for this purpose. The society could also train unemployed youth as tree climbers to tide over the increasing problem of dearth of climbers in the region.

The Gudiyattam society has already established a special shandy for the benefit of cotton farmers in the locality some three months back, where traders from Tirupur, Erode etc purchase the produce directly from the farmers based on the prevailing market rate through tender procedure.

When I visited Nellai during Pongal I have seen that the exterior works are still going... What happened to the guys in nellai??? Long time no updates from Velayutham, Mr.Nellai, Nellai Express, Yaser loves nellai, Britboy and others????

Thillai,in big bazzar interior works is going on, almost exterior works are finished, it might take another six months to finish all the works..

Work on first phase of river interlinking project likely to be over by year-end



In three years of execution, Rs.160 crore out of sanctioned Rs.213 crore spent

Work on the first phase of the Tamiraparani-Karumeniyar-Nambiyar river interlinking project is likely to be completed by the year-end.

Nearly three-fourth of the work, covering two stages of the project, has been carried out.

In three years of execution, Rs.160 crore out of the sanctioned Rs.213 crore was spent, said sources.

Estimated to cost Rs.369 crore, the project envisages utilisation of 2.765 tmcft (TMC), accounting for about 20 per cent of the surplus quantum of about 13.76 TMC, available on an average annually, in the Tamiraparani. The surplus quantum was assessed after studying 70 years' data on the amount of water released from the Srivaikuntam anicut, the last across the river, an official said.

Meant to benefit Tiruneveli and Tuticorin districts, the project was mooted to divert the dependable portion of surplus from the Kannadian anicut channel to dry areas, including Sathankulam and Thisaiyanvilai, besides stabilising irrigation in certain ayacuts of the Manimuthar channel that face water shortage.

The diversion will be done by increasing the carrying capacity of the Kannadian channel and laying a new canal for 73 km. The 6.5-km-long Kannadian channel's carrying capacity will be increased from 450 cubic feet per second (cusecs) to 3,680 cusecs.

A canal will be formed for 73 km, terminating at M.L. Theri, which is a sand dune. The new canal can carry 3,200 cusecs of water.

In the first phase, the component of the new canal will cover 39 km of the total length of 73 km.

This extends over taluks such as Ambasamudram and Nanguneri.

NEXT PHASE

The next phase – third and fourth stages – will cover the remaining 34 km of the proposed canal. As work to widen the Kannadian channel can be taken up only from March to May in view of the water flow, It will resume in a few weeks.

Though the State government is funding the project out of its resources, its Water Resources Department is trying to obtain Central assistance under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme. Once the nod is given, 90 per cent of the project cost will be borne by the Centre.

The official said the Central Water Commission had cleared the project. Efforts were on to get environmental clearance.

Here is good news for residents of wards 19, 26 and 27 as the much-awaited drinking water scheme for them, executed at an outlay of Rs.17.80 crore, is expected to be commissioned before April 15 following a trial run to be conducted within a fortnight.

As final works like connecting the main pipes near the overhead tanks, installing the electric panels in the pump houses, giving facelift to the pump rooms etc. are to be completed, trial run of this ambitious drinking water programme to check for leakages, if any, is to be taken-up within March 25.

“Once the election model code, now clamped on the entire district in view of the Sankarankovil by-poll, is withdrawn, we will start working on commissioning the project before April 15,” a senior official of Tirunelveli Corporation told The Hindu on Thursday while appealing to the public to pay the deposit amount immediately for getting the drinking water connection.

These wards, mostly housing middle and upper middle class families, are located on the periphery of the corporation limits thus experiencing extreme drinking water crisis for the past several years owing to rapid expansion and non-availability of a drinking water scheme, the massive project was designed by the local body to give around 11,000 drinking water connections including 10,750 domestic and 250 commercial connections in these three wards.

The Corporation has constructed seven overhead tanks at Ezhil Nagar (3 lakh litre), Thamizh Nagar (2 lakh litre), Teachers' Colony (2 lakh litre), Thirumal Nagar (3 lakh litre), Perumalpuram (4 lakh litre), Canara Bank Colony (2 lakh litre) and Kumaresan Nagar (3 lakh litre) and a ground-level sump with a capacity of 2 lakh at Teachers' Colony.

The overhead tank at Mahizhchi Nagar with a capacity of 4 lakh litre and the ground-level tank with the capacity of 8 lakh litre have been renovated to make the supply more effective.

Since water from the 9 infiltration wells, all sunk in Tamirabarani at Suththamalli, would be collected in this ground-level reservoir and then pumped to the overhead tanks, it was expected that the distribution of water would be smooth.

The Tirunelveli Infrastructure Developers Private Ltd is actually 1000 hectares SEZ project and not a 100 ha... which is massive and quite similar to the size of AMRL SEZ at Nanguneri... The SEZ has a valid in principle approval.. Refer to the below link published as of 13.12.2011.. which is just 3 months back.

And regarding Kayathar... though it is in Tuticorin District... it is close to Tirunelveli...maybe around 10 Km from Gangaikondan where Nellai IT SEZ is located ..so probably around 30 Kms from Nellai I believe... It is also on the Nellai - Madurai NH, so well connected.

However how far will the promoters take it forward and make this SEZ a sucess is a big question. To my knowledge they are a group of industrialists / well wishers of Nellai and given the track record of the project (i.e) in-principle approval taken some couple years back and not have applied for formal approvals raises a lot of question.... normally most SEZ will apply for formal approval within 6 months.

There are a lot of SEZ project which has been initiated but have lost stream due to the various difficulties - financial, political, bureaucracy etc etc...

In the list available in the link we have another in Tuticorin District.. which has also got approvals a couple of years back and no progress...

There were 2 other SEZs to my knowledge who came for in-principal approval but not sure if they received the approval (approval is valid for 1 year only and they need to extend this on an yearly basis) or got rejected and they have all faded.

In South TN, Nellai has got 3 SEZs - 1 mega SEZ by AMRL-TIDCO at Naguneri (30Kms south of Nellai. 1 SEZ at Gangaikondan for transport, 1 IT SEZ

Tuticorin Dist has got 2 SEZ - 1 food processing SEZ (Pearl City Food Port) and 1 Copper SEZ by Sterlite (but this will depend mostly after TNPCB issuing no clearance for their expansion)

ஆங்கிலேயர் ஆட்சிக்காலத்தில் 1908ம் ஆண்டில் வ.உ.சி., சுப்பிரமணிய சிவா, பத்மநாப அய்யங்கார் ஆகியோர் பங்கேற்ற சுதேசி இயக்க பிரசாரக்கூட்டங்கள் நெல்லை, தூத்துக்குடியில் நடந்தன. அன்னிய நாட்டுப்பொருட்களை புறக்கணிக்கும்படி தலைவர்கள் மக்களுக்கு வேண்டுகோள் விடுத்தனர்.சுதேசிய உணர்வு மக்களிடம் தீவிரமாக பரவியது. குதிரை வண்டிக்காரர்கள், சலவை, சவரத்தொழிலாளர்கள் ஆங்கிலேயர்களுக்கு பணியாற்ற மறுத்தனர். இதனால் ஆங்கிலேய ஆட்சியாளர்களுக்கு நெல்லை மக்கள் மீது காட்டம் இருந்தது.

"திருநெல்வேலி எழுச்சி' குறித்து பிரிட்டன் பார்லிமென்டில் விவாதம் நடந்தது. சென்னை சட்டசபையில் கேள்வி எழுப்பப்பட்டது. நகராட்சிக்கட்டடம் சேதப்படுத்தப்பட்டதால் அப்போதைய நெல்லை நகராட்சி மன்றம் எழுச்சியை கண்டித்து தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்றியது. கலவரத்தில் ஈடுபட்டதாக 53 பேர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டனர். 37 பேருக்கு ஜெயில் தண்டனை கிடைத்தது. பொருட்சேதங்களுக்கு மக்களிடம் தண்டத்தீர்வை வசூலிக்கப்பட்டது.

"திருநெல்வேலி எழுச்சி' நூற்றாண்டு விழா நெல்லையில் கடந்த 2008ம்ஆண்டு பல்வேறு அமைப்புகளால் கொண்டாடப்பட்டது. எழுச்சியை கண்டித்து முன்பு நிறைவேற்றப்பட்ட தீர்மானம் நெல்லை மாநகராட்சிக்கூட்டத்தில் திருத்தப்பட்டு பாராட்டு தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டது.
"திருநெல்வேலி எழுச்சி' 104வது ஆண்டு நினைவு நாள் நாளை நடக்கிறது. இளைஞர்களுக்கு தேசபக்தி வளர முன்னோர்களின் இதுபோன்ற தியாக வரலாற்றை நினைவூட்ட வேண்டியது அவசியம். இக்கடமை பொதுநல அமைப்புகளுக்கு உண்டு.
