IT revolution has necessitated use of computers: minister

The State Government has allotted 41,413 laptops meant for free distribution to the students in the district during the current fiscal, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, P. Senthurpandian has informed.

Distributing free laptops to the students in separate functions held at Sadakkathullah Appa College and St. Xavier's College, both in Palayamkottai, on Thursday, Mr. Senthurpandian said that the information technology revolution that was happening for the past two decades had necessitated the students to use computers in a big way to enrich their knowledge. While students coming from a wealthy background could easily buy a computer or a laptop, students from deprived families suffer a lot .

Sensing the agony of the poor students and their parents, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had promised to give free laptops to them. She has fulfilled the assurance by allotting adequate number of laptops to every district, including Tirunelveli, which would receive 41,413 laptops during this fiscal for free distribution.

“All these laptops are of superior quality with excellent configuration and it will certainly fulfil the expectations and the actual requirements of the beneficiaries,” Mr. Senthurpandian said.

Laptops were given by the Minister to 497 students of Sadakkathullah Appa College and 678 students of St. Xavier's College.

District Collector (In-Charge) B. Uma Maheshwari presided over the function in which Mayor, Tirunelveli Corporation, Vijila Sathyananth, Deputy Mayor P. Jeganathan alias Ganesan, Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Tirunelveli, P. Thirumurthy and others participated.

The government has allotted Rs. 9.31 crore so far for distribution of laptops to 6,770 students in Kanyakumari district, said Forest Minister K.T. Pachaimal.

Distributing laptops to 5,625 students belonging to 12 colleges in a function held at Women's Christian College here on Thursday the Minister said that the government had been implementing various schemes, including financial assistance to students, to pursue their higher education. Gone were the days when laptops were meant for wards of the rich people. Now the gap between rich and poor had already been thwarted with the distribution of laptops to the wards of poor and middle class people by the government.

Besides distributing financial assistance, the Government was engaged in distributing free text books, bicycles and uniforms to the students to motivate them to continue their education, said the Minister

He also inaugurated a new bus service at Thampathukonam to Bethelpuram via Rajakkamangalam, Vadalivilai, Kothavilai, Saral, Manavilai, Thalakkulam, Monday Market and Arunachala college.

District Revenue Officer Palanisamy, MLA Murugesan, correspondent of the college John Sahaya Chelliha, district panchayat president Saradamani and others attended the functions.
