Video now deleted, and placed in the generic 'Germany - Railways' thread. I had a vague feeling it wasn't right, but I did know that the Ruhr region was one of those 'mega'-regions

Now, at just after the 15th minute, the tram we are on follows behind another just before Luegplatz. Now, going by the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn Map where 2 lines meet, Is this therefore a regular occurrence?

Was it the other tram or the traffic signals themselves that demoted our clear signal to danger (15'30")? Wasn't our tram thrown a clear signal too early (15'53"), for that other one hadn't yet finished merging onto the track?

I don't think so. The stations aren't prepared to serve two trams at once. Situations like these are therefore to be avoided.

Mulheim places order for more Bombardier trams
12 DEC, 2013

Mulheim transport authority MVG has placed an order with Bombardier for 10 new Flexity trams worth €27 million.

The new batch of three-car, bi-directional trams will complement five vehicles already being built by Bombardier for MVG after it exercised an option on an order for 27 trams placed by the Essen transport authority (EVAG), which alongside MVG and the Duisburg transport authority (DVG) make up the Via Transport Company.

Klaus-Peter Wandelenus, managing director of MVG, said: “With this tram we have achieved a high level of standardization which will result in short servicing and maintenance periods.

“The tram’s operating efficiency over the entire lifecycle is of utmost importance. There is no room for isolated solutions and technical experiments. The new low-floor trams symbolize how we will act in Via in future.”

The trams will be built at Bombardier’s Bautzen facility, however, the electrical equipment will be manufactured in Mannheim and the bogies in Siegen.

The first vehicles are scheduled to be delivered in August 2015.

Many of the former Kölner 3000-series Düwag GT8s were sold to Konya's municipality in 1988. I'm not sure what year they were finally withdrawn in Köln but this is their last year of operation in Konya, as that fleet is to be replaced by new low-floor Škoda Elektra 28Ts this year.

You can still catch sight of them in operation on these webcams (until the last months of 2014):

Financing agreed for Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn expansion
Tuesday, December 16, 2014

Artists impression of the planned interchange at Bonn Vilich

THE government of the German state of North Rhine Westphalia has signed three financing and implementation agreements with Rhineland Transport Authority (NVR) and German Rail (DB) for the long-planned extension of Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn Line S13 from Troisdorf to Bonn Oberkassel

The €510m project will involve rebuilding a 13km section of the Troisdorf – Koblenz line with construction of a third or fourth track, new stations, and 15.5km of noise barriers. The extension will have six stations, including a new interchange with Bonn light rail Line 66 at Bonn Vilich.

Services will operate at intervals of 20 minutes or less and the extension will significantly improve links between the city of Bonn and Cologne-Bonn Airport, which is already served by Line S13 trains

Düsseldorf signalling upgrade
19 Jan 2015

GERMANY: Düsseldorf light rail operator Rheinbahn has commissioned Siemens to upgrade the signalling on the 11 km Stadtbahn tunnel in the city centre.

Siemens is to provide Trainguard ZUB 222 train protection for semi-automated operation; this will monitor the vehicle’s speed continuously during driver operation. Controlguide Vicos operations control will also be installed, and relay interlocking will be replaced by a Trackguard Sicas ECC electronic interlocking

AFAIK the Stadtbahn tunnels in Düsseldorf and Duisburg have had LZB semi-automatic operation from the beginning. But the technology has become outdated and needs to be replaced with something newer.

The big question seems to be whether Duisburg will have the money to upgrade their lines with the new signalling system too. Otherwise the through line U79 might have to be cut at the border between both cities.

They added LZB on some parts later but basically Stadtbahn-tunnel went in service with LZB (moving-block from Siemens). Main Problem is obsolescence of spare parts, that´s why they interrupted LZB in Berlin on U9 e. g.. There is a new generation of LZB now to be supplied. Personally I don´t really fear an interruption of U79 as trains have to work in LZB-mode, street-operating and standard signal-mode. It´s maybe about the cost to supply trains with new LZB-technics, which Duisburg cannot pay. It´s really hard for Duisburg at the moment.

BTW, Dortmund and Stuttgart use a simpler system called ZUB, which fits perfect to Stadtbahn-purpose. LZB was invented for ATO in high-frequency metros.

According to the tender, 29 trains will be required for the launch of the new Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn timetable in December 2019 and the entire fleet must be in service by 2021.
