Yes.

The redskins would easily fill out a 90k stadium. It's just that their stadium is so crap that they don't.

Phil Lowry on RFK Stadium

From Green Cathedrals

Quote:
The park looks like a wet straw hat, or a waffle whose center stuck to the griddle, because of its curved, dipping roof. This is a great football stadium: Its ugly modern lines seem designed by Stalin, and they work very well to hold in the cacophony of sound that football generates. Its formal, pretentious, martial, classically antiseptic, and cold style suit football just fine. But for baseball, there is too little intimacy with the game, and the fans are too far away from the action.

I thought RFK was a fine place to watch a baseball game. It was certainly a better baseball stadium than it was a football stadium.

Why was it a better baseball stadium? The Redskins were there longer than any baseball team.

Sightlines were always geared towards baseball, even more so than most cookie cutters. The lower level is real shallow by NFL standards and the angles along the 1st and 3rd baselines have a decidedly baseball angle to them. Way to small for the 'skins as well.

The length of time the Redskins spent there has nothing to do with it. RFK was a baseball stadium first, and a football stadium second.

I actually took a peak at this stadium during my visit to DC last week.

And wow, RFK stadium is quite decrepit. And the surrounding neighborhood looks somewhat sketchy.

I hope that the Redskins and or DC United get new stadiums in the future. Both RFK and FedEx need to go.

I may be wrong, but I believe the Redskins called it home before the second Senators franchise.
October 1, 1961 for football and April 1962 for the expansion Senators.

That isn't what he meant. He meant it was designed with the first priority being baseball sightlines.

Exactly, this becomes very apparent when viewed from above:

I'm sorry, I know RFK is not supposed to be a nice place (okay its a dump) but 13,176 for the game against PSG tonight is embarrasing. You hve DeRo, Pontius and some great players and Ibrahimovic was making his debut for PSG. Is it just the stadium, or am I missing something else?

.... maybe some people just didn't want to go to a soccer game?

It's not like ALL stadiums that hosted World Football Challenge games sold out, ya know.

I'm not saying it had to sell out, but it was a poor crowd for any game, MLS or Friendly. The other games at Fenway, Wrigley, MT&T in Balitmore were getting 35-40k per game

Still, the point I was getting across is that a good number of the people of D.C. or at least those who were in D.C. probably just didn't want to go.

Just throwing that out there.

Mid season friendlies are getting old. I don't think they should have them anymore now that MLS is a fairly established league. The players are not exactly fond of being injured in meaningless games. Fans are losing interest too.

Maybe they just shouldn't have them in DC, or have them like in other cities where it is 2 visting teams playing

I still think people like to see these games and it still helps grow the game in North America

The attendance numbers at most of these games prove that their is still a big interest. We are especially happy to have them in Baltimore where we don't have an MLS team. There are plenty of fans of many of these Euro teams that are thrilled to finally get a chance to see their team. Couldn't believe how many Liverpool fans came from so many places this weekend.

Also, Liverpool is now outfitted by Warrior, and Tottenham by Under Armour. That doesn't happen without an American interest in these clubs, which is done through all sorts of marketing.

So one poor attendance by a weak-brand team in the US market is enough to call it all off? How about all the other attendances above 30,000? Or the ones above 50,000? And unlike last year theres no ManUtd or Barca either.

Even if they have Ibrahimovic, the fact is that PSG is still a nobody to the average American soccer fan. Not only do they play in a league thats not watched in the states, they also haven't been a Champions League fixture for a while.
