I do like it but since it's going to be for student accomodation I would worry (in light of Nido's various efforts) about the build quality - and specifically the finish - random cladding perhaps?

This one doesn't look too bad in it's splendid isolation - and the dreary Pentonville Road does benefit from having something bright and cheerful like these.
However it's when buildings with relatively low build quality are in close proximity to high quality projects (such as the 100MS/Heron axis) that the problems begin. The 'Quill' regardless of how it's finished will be contending with the 'beauty & the beast' pairing of The Shard and Guy's Hospital! In other words it's bound to look great compared to one and not so great compared to the other (can you work out which one?) |

Over on SE1 they have noticed this has gone in for planning.
Demolition of Capital House, 40-46 Weston Street and erection of a 31 storey building (109.6m) (18557m2 gea) to provide 525 student accommodation units (sui Generis) on floors 1-28, ancillary bar, gym and library (floors 29-31), a retail/cafe unit (flexible class A1/A3) (371 sqm gea) at ground floor level, 290 cycle parking spaces, 2 accessible car parking spaces and 1 service bay at basement level, associated refuse and recycling and an area of public open space. |

wow...another one with a good chance of getting built quickly if planning permission is granted. It would be a nice addition to the area. The design for (rich) student housing in London is stunning relative to what's being built elsewhere.

^ Leeds has the best looking student accomodation in the UK. I don't think the "Quill" will take this place... It looks too messy compared to Broadcasting Tower in Leeds:

Another 100m+, cool. It's a nice surprise to here it will be taller than expected.
That Leeds one is nice too. |

I wasn't aware that this tower in Leeds was for student accomodations. This is stunning, and indeed it wins the crown!

Having attended the original public consultation meeting, I put my name down to receive further updates on this development. A letter arrived today - with the following list of "enhancements" to the original design. Unfortunately no pics (yet).
The design remains broadly similar to the one you may have seen in the summer, but we thought it would be useful to provide you with a summary of the enhancements. The main changes are as follows:

^ Well there are only two other student towers in leeds and they book look awful in all but a few photos. The streetscape surrounding the tower is very 1960s - motorways and concrete underpasses/tunnels/bridges etc - it's on the northern fringe of the city centre. It's the only part of Leeds that looks like Birmingham! It's almost opposite Leeds Metropolitan University, and the low rise part of the building adjacent to the tower houses the Faculty of Arts (fine art, architecture etc). I study here! The Mac suite on the 3rd floor is stunning.
It's encouraging to see London following in Leeds' footsteps with high rise student flats... I'm surprised that tall student apartments haven't been around for longer - they are very easy to design - you simply find a working floorplate and copy and paste x number of times for the number of floors you desire. They are as simple as, if not simpler than 60s tower blocks in layout and design. Modern high rise student accomodation does suffer visually because of the building regulation stating that windows can be no bigger than a certain size. This results in small-looking windows (even though the window I looked out of in my Opal Tower flat was 800x1200mm), meaning that the general look of student accomodation is determined by the cladding quality. It's been proven in Leeds that the quality differences in cheap plastic cladding and expensive weathering steel cladding are obvious, but remember that students only really care about a big fridge, nearby supermarkets/clubs/bars and a quick walk to uni... How far is quill from the nearest appropriate university? And is it expected to be let to students from any particular university, or are all welcome?
