Brazil Airline TAM Seeks To Buy 31% Stake In TRIP

SAO PAULO (Dow Jones)--The largest Brazilian airline in terms of revenue, TAM SA (TAM, TAMM4.BR), said Wednesday that it signed a letter of intention to buy a stake of up to 31% in Brazil's small airline, TRIP Linhas Areas.

The company, however, didn't unveil an amount for the potential acquisition nor a timetable to conclude it.

"It is not possible, at this moment, to provide any forecast about the outcome of the mentioned negotiations, since they are still preliminary and do not bind or oblige the parties, which may withdraw from negotiations at any time without being able to be claimed, by any of the parties, right of indemnity for any reason," the company said in a statement.

TRIP, which has annual revenue of 750 million Brazilian reais ($454 million), ended 2010 with a market share of 2.71%, compared with a market share of 43.2% for TAM.

"TAM seeks to capture market growth and have a more significant exposure in the medium density routes market. TAM??s current routes and TRIP's are mostly complementary. The improvement in the connectivity could lead to an even greater flow of passengers for both companies," the company said.

TAM is in the process to merger their operations with Chile's flagship carrier LAN Airlines SA (LFL, LAN.SN). Earlier this month, the Chilean antitrust court said it will review the proposed merger.

Flights to Rio de Janeiro Increased by TAM

- TAM Announce an Increase in Flights to Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian airline TAM has revealed that they are to increase the number of services provided between London Heathrow and the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. With the delivery of two new Airbus A330's to their fleet, the airline has said that the next few months would see an increased number of flights to a number of cities.

With two new aircraft, TAM said that New York, Frankfurt and London would all see an increase in services. From May 2nd a daily service will be available from Frankfurt, offering the ideal route to South America for Germans and connecting passengers. A fifth weekly flight will also be added to New York next month, whilst a sixth service is scheduled to be added in August. For British travellers, TAM is also attempting to double their London to Rio route from three weekly services to six from August 1st. However, this development remains uncertain whilst the airline wait for Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency approval.

Over the coming years Brazil is set to become an even bigger tourist destination than it already is, with the Football World Cup in 2014 and Rio then hosting the Olympics in 2016. TAM stated that they had noted "considerable growth in the amount of leisure and business traffic" between London and Rio, with business passengers particularly driven by growth in Brazilian banking, finance, gas and oil. So with more travel choice expected to be offered to British travellers, Rio's attraction is due to soar.

It is indeed, especially considering the previous years' growth: 13% in 2009 and 21% in 2010. Three years of double-digit growth (and a big double-digit).

If the quality of the infrastructure of our airports could grow at the proportion of the number of passangers flow, that would be fabulous... Unfortunately government and Infraero do not care the least and all airports still look lousy and dated.
A shame for a country chosen to host the World Cup 2014.

The saddest part is to know that absolutely nothing has been done so far and government seems to be completely lost and adrift regarding the model of administration to follow, before starting the works for enlargement and modernization of the existing old and crappy terminals.

Old time news. Flight International Magazine, dated 1986, about the international expansion of Brazilian airlines. Enjoy.

India, Brazil propel global aviation market growth

SINGAPORE: Recording the strongest growth in the world, India's domestic aviation market has tripled in the past five years, followed by the markets in Brazil and China which doubled during this period.

"Over the last five years, Indian domestic expansion has been the strongest with a tripling in size. China and Brazil doubled in size over the same period," a latest report of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said.

"The strength in Chinese and Indian markets helped offset the weakness in routes associated with Japan. Japan's international traffic is down 20 per cent, knocking a full one per cent off of total international travel," it said.

India and Brazil showed the strongest domestic growth at 25.6 and 23.8 per cent respectively. "Both are continuing their trend of high-speed growth," the report said, adding China's domestic market saw a decline in growth to 10.8 per cent this April though it remained a robust market.

Growing air traffic in India, Brazil and China has led to a rebound in the aviation market which grew by 16.5 per cent in April despite high oil prices, Iceland volcanic eruption and Japan tsunami and political unrest in West Asia and North Africa hitting international air travel.

In spite of such "significant" growth, the profits of the airline industry were being squeezed by a series of crises and shocks that marked the first four months of this year.

"Their impact on demand will continue to ease as we move into the second half (of this year)," IATA chief Giovanni Bisignani said here, adding "unfortunately two things are spoiling the party -- demand shocks and high jet fuel prices".

Now we're talking! Very nice indeed. 26 positions for E190/A320/B737 like aircrafts, or 13 positions for heavies.

TAM Drops ATR Fleet In Overhaul Of Pantanal

Jul 8, 2011
By Darren Shannon

Brazilian carrier TAM is restructuring operations at Pantanal, the regional airline acquired early last year for BRL13 million ($8.3 million).

The plan, which TAM says was originally scheduled for the end of the month but was implemented without notice July 7, culls the handful of ATR 42-300s operated by Pantanal before its acquisition. The aircraft are being replaced by three Airbus narrowbodies, which join two Airbus A319s and a single A320 subleased by Pantanal from TAM since its acquisition.

Pantanal’s network is also trimmed, with the operator dropping routes that cannot accommodate the three A319s and three A320s that now comprise its fleet, says a TAM spokesman.

Some of the routes are from the network acquired by TAM. The airline’s spokesman confirms that four destinations will still be accessible through a code-share signed in March with Embraer E-Jet operator TRIP.

All six Airbus aircraft operated by Pantanal are in TAM livery, confirms the spokesman, although he notes that ticket sales are still processed through the regional and that all crews are Pantanal’s.

Some of the ATR crews are being retrained on the Airbus narrowbodies, while others have opted to leave the airline, he adds.

Recent problems with an engine on a Pantanal ATR 42 and a reported audit by Brazil’s Agencia Nacional de Aviacao Civil, have spurred local media to speculate that the cause of TAM’s unexpected decision is due to maintenance. The timing of the announcement also coincides with a pending decision by the mainline carrier on the acquisition of a 31% stake in TRIP as part of its code-share arrangement.

Plane crash in Brazil kills 16

SAO PAULO -- A regional airliner crashed in a northeastern city in Brazil Monday, killing all 16 people on board, the nation's Air Force said.

The crew of the twin-engine aircraft belonging to Noar Airlines reported problems shortly after taking off about 7 a.m. (6 a.m. EDT; 1000 GMT) from the city of Recife en route to the city of Natal.

The Air Force did not indicate what the problems were or what caused the crash, but said it is investigating.

The pilot tried to make an emergency landing in a vacant lot near a beach on the outskirts of the city's center, near several apartment buildings. But witnesses said the aircraft went down hard and burst into flames.

Noar Airlines' website says it began operations in June 2010 and that it makes 278 flights a week. It owns a fleet of four small planes.
