Evanston, IL - Chicago's fantastic northern neighbor (80 photos)

I headed up to Evanston today to take some photos of my favorite Illinois city other than Chicago. An active downtown, beautiful leafy neighborhoods, picturesque lakefront setting, and a youthful collegiate presence all combine to create an outstanding city.

Near the Main Street purple line station:

I hope you all were able to enjoy Evanston through these photos as much as I enjoyed my visit this afternoon.

Great photos! Wish I had had the time to visit Evanston when I was in Chicago in 1991.

Great thread! I had an old friend who grew up in Evanston and for some reason I always imagined it to be a dumpy suburb, but it looks so well developed. I'm impressed.
Thanks for the tour!

Another great set of pix, Aaron W.

I see that you were enjoying the views very much...

A long time ago (early 1990s), there used to be a bookstore by the Noyes station that sold French and other European publications exclusively. I miss that shop...

I loved the architecture and the atmosphere of the city, it seems to be very walking friendly. Looks very european to me.

IMO, Evanston is a good model for urban suburbia. BTW, show hot girls next time.

I'm sure there were plenty of "hot" girls around, but I was too distracted by the hot shirtless guys.

Just a little bump because I thought this was a great photo thread of a place you normally don't see.

No, 'Ordinary People' was set and filmed in far more posh and upscale Lake Forest, which is about 16 miles up the lake shore from evanston.

Evanston reminds me of White Plains, New York. I love the big New England style homes. It also reminds me of the North Shore of Massachusetts.

When I was there in October I saw a lot of McCain posters on peoples lawns. It was quite the switch from Chicago where Obama posters prevailed.

if you saw a lot of mccain posters, you probably weren't in evanston, but rather points further north along the north shore where you'll find more conservatives, places like winnetka and highland park and so forth. evanston, is very left wing by midwest standards. no, it's not berkley, but in the midwest, all things political tend to be a lot more muted, both on the left and on the right.

i work in evanston and i'd roughly estimate that the ratio of obama to mccain stuff in terms of lawn signs, bumper stickers, t-shirts, etc. in evanston was about 20-1 in obama's favor during the campaign last year.

Actually, you are right. My apologies. It was north of Northwestern where I saw them and I was in Winnetka right after Evanston right across from the Baha'ia Temple.

I guess Chicago is not only about skyscrapers. The neighborhoods you took pictures of seem to be very nice and peaceful.
