In Košice we have several signs with DIN 1451.

We should wait whether other EU countries will introduce Tern. Maybe when we will be last non-Tern country our companies withdraw.
Well, now it's the best time to change to font as all signs have to be replaced due to new traffic law. If they will be replaced by Grotesk signs we won't get rid of Grotesk for decades altough Tern would be officially introduced. Noone would change signs because of the font.

There are some efforts to change the font currently, but who knows... Some changes were ready for novelisation of traffic law before elections. It was suggested to replace Grotesk by Tern. But... The capital letters on signage wasn't replaced so changing the font wouldn't have effect.

I have some infos about efforts to introduce Tern together with cancelling only-capital letters but who knows how it will be finally accredited. Also it is prepared renumbering of expressways and after prepared fusion of SSC and NDS (SSC=Slovak Roads Maintanance, NDS-National Motorway Corporation) maybe also renumbering of 1 and 2-class-roads. But maybe...

I have more detailed infos but I was asked not to publish details about it.

It's a pity all those changed didn't take place together with the new traffic law. Introduction of Tern, non-only-capital letters and renumbering of at least motorways and expressways would be great steps forward. It would be nice if also other roads were renumbered, because federal numbering is awfully obsolete.

Hopefully there will be willingness to make so huge changes.

Polish road signs font hasn't official name. 'Drogowskaz' is the name that is used only on this forum.

In Polish SSC project, a font is also modified. Old version is corrected, but it is made also narrow version.

Everything you can see here:
http://www.drogowskazclassic.pl/pismo.php
This is website of all project (only Polish version).

This font is widely used in Bulgaria, but does anyone know what's its name ans whether it's in use somewhere else in Europe?

Latin characters are SNV, just as in former Yugoslavia, Switzerland and Belgium.

Thank you!

EDIT: Is SNV Becker the same as VSS-Schriften?

Here are some from South Africa in the standard DIN 1451 font that is used, I think it is clear without being bland.

Estonian signage typeface is uppercase Arial.

It has been in effect since 2001; previously, ГОСТ 10807-78 typeface was used. (I wrote about that in more detail here and here.)

Hoping to specify a few more details, I made a small graphical experiment. (Of course, I could go to Standards Centre and buy a dead-tree edition of the relevant standard book, but I haven't bothered to do that yet.)

A source image:

The same sign recreated as vector graphics:

Here I used Arial Medium -- width condensed to 90% and letter-spacing increased by 5% of font size. For light text on dark background, this seems like a very close match to the actual font used out there.

Black-on-white text seems to be a bit off, still; it must be slightly heaver, but it is not Arial Bold, either.

Tern typeface (official download - paying) in effect on speed limit signs on A2 (Austria):

I don't like it at all. Yuck.
At least 6 should be upside down turned 9 (see above link).

And in my opinion it is not so clearly recognisable as DIN or Arial typeface.

Tern is a compromise. It is meat nor fish, like we say in NL. They've just hussled SNV, DIN, Frutiger ans ANWB-Uu and said: 'hey, we have something suitable for Europe'. Well, it's not suitable at all.

TERN is also very bad because it isn't completely sans serif.

This does not look good at all in my opinion. I´m quite a fan of the old "slim" speed limit digits

It´s not very different from the Norwegian speed limit digits though

Clearview!

I have no idea why most North American road geeks detest it so much.

I don't like the Clearview as much as the Highway Gothic, but I don't hate it.
I've heard that the newest MUTCD only allows to use Clearview on light-on-dark signs (eg. white on green), but not on dark-on-light signs (eg. black on yellow). Is it true? And how does it work actually? Are the city names written with Clearview and the EXIT ONLY parts with Highway Gothic? That topic is a bit misty for me because I downloaded the newest MUTCD in PDF format from the Department of Transportation's site and every sign still use Highway Gothic there. By the way, do you also think that Clearview is a bit similar to the Transport typeface used on British signs?

I also saw that somewhere, I think that according to some tests, clearview is clearer on light on dark signs, but the opposite is true when it comes to dark on light signs.
