In Norway we use Arial, if I'm not mistaken (or at least a font that is very similar to it).

Norway doesn't use Arial--instead it uses a custom-designed alphabet which was introduced in the mid-1960's and is said to be based on the Transport alphabets used in the UK. However, the Norwegians didn't carry over some styling cues from Transport, such as the bottom curl on lowercase L. I think the name of the Norwegian typeface is Trafikkalfabetet.

Regarding uppercase versus lowercase: there is a body of research which points to the conclusion that mixed-case has only a slight advantage over uppercase. The letters in mixed-case legend are smaller on average than is the case for all-uppercase legend, and this disparity is only partially compensated for by improved recognition of letter shape and the increase in the basic type size that becomes possible (without expanding sign panel area) when mixed-case legend is used. This means that it is perfectly viable to use all-uppercase only, mixed-case only, or a combination of both.

In the US the freeway signing system has used mixed case for primary legend (destinations, etc.) since the 1950's, but where small guide signs on conventional roads are concerned, there is a mix. Some states (e.g., CA, WA) use mixed-case, while others use uppercase only. These pictures show all-uppercase signing as used on conventional-road state highways in Kansas:

According to Statens Vegvesen, when they use different types of electronic road signage, they recommend using Arial, as being the font closest to the one they actually use. But, you're right. That's not what they use. But I'm sure it's been some changes since the 60's, or?...

Since someone photoshopped that picture, obviously.

It looks cool though. I like the German way of signage on the motorway.

No. The Roman lettering is in one of the VSS-Schriften. But the Cyrillic lettering is in what appears to be a specially designed typeface intended to complement the VSS typeface.

Doesn't the blue sign seem a bit too bright blue? Doesn't it seem a bit smooth? The perspective is a bit off, too - you can see where the left-hand and right-hand signs join, it looks a bit off. I would improve the shape a bit, decrease color saturation and luminosity a bit, and add a tiny bit of noise just to make it look less photoshopped.

I've done some sign photoshopping so i know what I'm doing.

Anyway, I doubt The US will use blue signs for directions. They are better off using green signs and highway gothic fonts.

Thank you. I think they're nice, visible, fonts in both alphabets. What do you think?

It's the same we use in Croatia. And I don't like it. I hope we will switch to the new Swiss font (since this one is Swiss, too).
But it could be worse.

What's better off? It has been proven that, when equipped with modern-day diamond grade coating, blue signs have a better visibility, in particular at night than green signs have. In an ideal world, all countries would use blue as their primary colour, and if there had to be a colour difference between motorway and non-motorway, blue would be the motorway colour and green or yellow the non-motorway colour. Blue as a colour for service signs is in a way a waste, since blue could have been used much better.

But well, that's in an ideal world. Surely the US is never going to switch. It would be a waste of money if they did and the green signs as currently used are still readible enough.
