Best practice guide on road signing

I found this interesting publication on the Transport website of the European Commission:

Sydney, Australia
Just goes to show that good signs can be made with Highway Gothic.

Australia doesn't.
The state of New South Wales does. The shields with numbers on them are being phased out for alpha numeric route numbering, and this sign is brand new.

from Sole24ore blog "strade sicure"

Motorway A24
Red motorway signs to reach the operational centers of civil protection (C.O.M.), set due to the last year earthquake.
Font should be Transport D heavy, like the rest of the Italian road signs.

If I remember correctly, the start and end of a motorway outside NSW are usually signposted in plain text "START FREEWAY" and "END FREEWAY". Basically the same as the NSW signs where the same message is conveyed with a motorway symbol. I don't see the need though of a sign which first shows an M-prefix and then also states that you're heading towards a motorway. Separately mentioning "MOTORWAY" is no longer required now that NSW has alphanumeric road numbers. Or should we expect the alphanumeric numbers to be coverplated shortly, as has (unfortunately, IMO) been common in NSW for years ...?

The sign was supposed to be coverplated, but someone forgot to.

Good news in a way, because I think that alphanumeric numbers are better than the old system. It's a shame that those new numbers continue to be coverplated throughout NSW for almost a decade. When, at long last, will those coverplate fairies finally come along and remove them?

But well, we're getting off topic.

Which Grotesk? Grotesk is nothing but "Sans Serif" in German...

Grotesque is also an expression. It means something weird or bizarre, maybe he used it to say he couldn't find it on the internet.

Since 1.1.2010 Slovakia and Austria are using a new TERN typeface, you can buy it via this site: http://www.iiid.net/SOMS/Typeface%20Tern.htm - there are also some examples...

There were some pictures from Austria. In Slovakia there's AFAIK not a single sign with TERN so far. Actually, I would like to see at least some official confirmation that we use TERN, otherwise, seeing is believing, but we have to wait for some new section.
