FOR | Fortaleza International Airport

Fortaleza City

Fortaleza ("fortress", Portuguese pronunciation: [fortaˈlezɐ]) is the state capital of Ceará, located in Northeastern Brazil. With a population of over 3.4 million (metropolitan region), Fortaleza has an area of 313 square kilometres (121 sq mi). Fortaleza's history began on February 2, 1500, when Spaniard Vicente Pinzón landed in Mucuripe's cove and named the new land Santa Maria de la Consolación. Because of the Treaty of Tordesillas, the discovery was never officially sanctioned. Colonisation began when the Portuguese Pero Coelho de Souza constructed the Fortim de São Tiago in the estuary of Ceará River in 1603. Later, the Dutch occupied the Brazilian Northeast and founded the Fort Schoonenborch. When they were expelled from Ceará, the Portuguese renamed it to Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assunção. In 1726, the town of the fort was raised to the condition of village. In 1799, the Province of Ceará was separated from the Province of Pernambuco and Fortaleza was chosen as its capital.

According to the IBGE of 2008, there were 3,493,000 people residing in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza. The population density was 7,587.68 inhabitants per square kilometre (19,652.0 /sq mi). The last PNAD (National Research for Sample of Domiciles) census revealed the following numbers: 2,095,800 Pardo (brown) people (60.0%), 1,229,536 White people (35.2%), 153,692 Black people (4.4%), 13,972 Asian or Amerindian people (0.4%).

In the 1980s, Fortaleza overcomes Recife in population terms, becoming the second most populous city in Northeastern Brazil, with 1,308,919 inhabitants. Throughout the last decades of the 20th century the city "swelled" increasingly until its population exceeded two million inhabitants (in 2000). With a current city population estimated in 2,458,545 inhabitants, Fortaleza is the 5th most populated city in Brazil, after São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and Brasília.

Did you actually mean that? Boy you really need to travel around Latin America, that comment is just not knowing what Latin America has to offer.

Brazil : Authorities plan US$292mn Fortaleza airport expansion for World Cup

Brazil's federal and Ceara state governments are planning a 500mn-real (US$292mn) initiative to expand the Pinto Martins airport in state capital Fortaleza, the official 2014 World Cup website reported in a release.

The improvements will increase passenger capacity by 166% and parking capacity by 110%.

The plan includes the construction of a new passenger terminal where the cargo terminal is currently located, as well as a parking area with 1,000 additional spaces.

The new terminal will increase passenger capacity from 3mn to 8mn passengers/year, the report said.

The objective is to meet the increased demand that is expected during the 2014 World Cup.

Funding will come from Brazil's national airport authority Infraero INFRAERO (Empresa Brasileira de Infra-Estrutura Aeroportuária), as well as federal and state governments. There is also the possibility of receiving resources from the country's growth acceleration plan (PAC).

Construction will start in 2011 or 2012.

Should have expanded the terminal of this airport on both sides instead of just the east side.
