Santa Maria in Trastevere (Rome)

The very rich ceiling has carved and golden coffers with polychrome bottoms, on a drawing by Domenichino (1617).

Absolutely breathtaking.

I don't think Australia has any ceilings that come anywhere near these...

The original top 10 article was a little biased in favour of USA, the LA and Chicago (9 & 10 I think) were good but not spectacular. The Italian ceilings are incredible.

San Bernardino (L'Aquila, Italy)

The interior, after the catastrophic earthquake of 1703, was re-decorated in Baroque style.

It's strange nobody has mentioned the very famous ceiling of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, the masterpiece of Le Brun.

Hall of Mirrors, Versailles

It was recently restored, like the Sistine Chapel a few years ago, and the colors are now more vivid than ever.

The ceiling tells the story of Louis XIV's victories in Europe:

The marbles is what I prefer though.

The ceiling of the Gallery of Apollo at the Louvre is also very famous. It is also the work of Le Brun. It predates the Hall of Mirrors by 10 years.

There are a many other hidden gems in Paris. Some of these are not accessible to tourists.

Golden Gallery, Bank of France
Restricted visits (this is the headquarters of the Bank of France). The ceiling of the Golden Gallery was painted by François Perrier between 1645 and 1650. Le Brun (of the Hall of Mirrors' fame) was a student of François Perrier.

Library of the French Senate
Restricted visit (this is the French Senate). The ceiling, from 1847, is the work of the famous paintor Eugène Delacroix.

The ceiling of the French Senate Library contains in particular two masterpieces of Eugène Delacroix.

The first masterpiece shows Alexander the Great after the Battle of Arbela having the poems of Homer deposited in the golden arch of Darius:

The second masterpiece of Delacroix is on the central cupola of the French Senate Library. It depicts the Limbo (First Circle) of Dante's Inferno, where the unbaptized but virtuous wise men of Antiquity reside (they are supposed to inspire the French senators I suppose). Delacroix represented Homer, Ovid, Horace, Marcus Aurelius, Cicero, Julius Caesar, and many others:

I was just about to say - surely Versailles is more than worthy of a mention?
