Rape of the Sabines, ceiling by Luca Cambiaso (16th century), Villa Imperiale, Genoa, Italy

Villa Imperiale: not quite the Imperial Villa, just Villa of the Imperiales, a family closely tied to Palaeologi dynasty, emperors of Trebisonda and Costantinople.

Pantheon (Rome)

Built in 126 AD (27-25 BC)
It's the largest unreinforced solid concrete dome in the world till present. The height to the oculus and the diameter of the interior circle are the same, 43.3 metres (142 ft).

Palazzo Doria Spinola, Genoa, Italy.

Two-storey all-around frescoed Court of Honour (World Heritage Site).

Today it houses the Prefecture of Police of the province of Genoa.

Milan, Venice, Rome in three maps of the 16th century (need an upgrade ). More cities displayed along the other walls.

A private Chapel: the Oratory of S. Filippo Neri, via Lomellini, Genoa, Italy.
The Lomellinis (or Lomellinos) built a track of the Strade Nuove (New Roads) of XVI century's Genoa, the city that according to historian F. Braudel first invented financial capitalism and world-system economy,as this filthy rich city-state was the lender of last resort to the Spanish Crown (in current 2009 we may be perhaps at the end or at a turning point of the 4th cycle, which shivers me a little). This track was predictably named Via Lomellini, and still retains the name - and Lomellini family still retain the estates . The palaces and churches alongside are world heritage site (Palazzi dei Rolli).

Glory of St. Filippo Neri, by Marcantonio Franceschini (1714).

I don't see the point in flooding the thread with each and every ceiling in Italy. This is a thread about world ceilings, not about Italian ceilings! The only effect it will have on forumers is the opposite of what you guys intended: they will be completely disgusted with Italian ceilings. But if that's what you're looking for then go ahead...

Anyone is free to post. I've seen ceilings from all over the world I wasn't aware of before. By the way, Italy is full of beautiful ceilings.

Your patent and unexplainable envy -once more- is a very bad attitude, try to heal if you ever can.

At least, don't bother people when unrequested.

PS Many more are to come.

It's not necessarily envy. I am also upset by the lack of abstraction in the Italian ceilings.

Trust me, it is. I know the guy. He's an old overcontentious acquaintance.

As for abstracted ceilings, you can choose among the coffered ceilings of the pantheon or many churches, the geometric style of works like the Piccolomini Library, the stuccoed ornamentations of the vault of Venaria Castle, the muqarnas of sicilian norman-moorish basilicas, the dynamic structures of the dome of S. Lorenzo in Turin or Pier Luigi Nervi's ceilings.
Many of them have been already displayed.

Renaissance or barock ceilings may appear overload at a first glimpse. They are huge paintings indeed. The all best of Giotto's Michelangelo's Raphael's Leonardo's Giulio Romano's Tiziano's Veronese's Tiepolo's etc. work is not stored in modern artificial repositories called museums, but kept in its originary place. Museums are didactically useful, but are also a de-contestualisation of the original meaning and function of most works of art (unless created to be traded).

Then again stating that old master art galleries (this is what those ceilings are, and it's a plus) are loaded with human figures, clouds, landscapes and greenery is not different from complaining that the ceilings of mosques are relentlessly decorated with geometric stuff.

I like the ceilings with icons the most (especially the Florence Baptistry).
