City of Birmingham Stadium
This 55000 seat multi-purpose stadium was planned as part of a £300m sports village. The major enabling factor would have been the presence of a super casino on site. When such planned casino's where dropped by the government there was a major drop in potential funding, putting an end to this ambitious proposal. Birmingham FC are currently looking to expand their current ground, St Andrews.

Channel Crossing Proposals
A crossing for the channel has had more proposals than Zsa Zsa Gabor over the years. These are from Popular Mechanics magazine in 1956.

The problem with a bridge would be weather. A storm would have it cut off.

I wasn't aware King Edward Tower had been cancelled, that's a shame.

IMHO Grand Central Lime is the only real loss there, and the City Gate was in the wrong part of Brighton.

Was the city gateway tower ever a serious proposal?

It's probably true - it's just that I hadn't kept up to speed with the project. It still seems recent that the render came out so I had assumed it had gone the way of most projects and put on hold...
Brunswick Quay was rejected by the Secretary of State, I believe. Anyone know if anything has been planned in its place?

RE: some of those Liverpool towers
King Edward Tower was knocked back by the planners, and came back in a different guise. Grand Central on Skelhorne Street fell victim to the heritage lobby and the usual planning politics, also competing with another proposal, the Lime Street Gateway tower. The developers were told to do something better quality. I think they've since gone bust? ![]() The Lime Street Gateway Tower was held up by a CPO on a bookshop, and never got built anyway. Grand Central Station Tower, part of the Central Village scheme, deemed to high iirc, and eventually turned in to two smaller towers. Parts of this scheme are under construction.
