Plymouth Ho

Apologies for the quality, pics are from my old mobile, and I wrote the intro in a rush as I was proposing to a Mexican girl.

Quote:
Plymouth Hoe, referred to locally as the Hoe, is a large south facing open public space in the English coastal city of Plymouth. The Hoe is adjacent to and above the low limestone cliffs that form the seafront and it commands magnificent views of Plymouth Sound, Drake's Island, and across the Hamoaze to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall. The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon word Hoe, a sloping ridge shaped like an inverted foot and heel.
- Wikipedia.

Plymouth was once considered one of the most beautiful coastal cities of Europe, certainly of Britain. It was heavily bombed by the Ze Germans and lost most of it's city centre core. This is a tragedy. Although the Ho and Barbican largely escaped bombing, it didn't entirely as the Pier and some other buildings were destroyed.

Here are some photos taken by me via my camera phone today and one other occasion. Plymouth Ho and the Barbican area (which I only show a part of) is both large and pretty. We are very lucky here to have such areas of outstanding natural beauty. Plymouth is undergoing a 20 year plan to turn it into the 'Barcelona of Britain'. You laugh but although it's smaller it is capable of so much. The architect who drew up the Plans is David Mackay. He also drew up the masterplan for Barcelona. Plymouth is hampered by it's location. The last City in the South West doesn't get enough investment, and yet sits in an ideal location for quality of life and beauty. Cornwall is attached to it also, and Somerset the other way.

Thanks Medo

And no Ho doesn't refer to the local prostitutes, as they reside around Millbay docks nearby....so i'm told....as it were....kinda thing.

Plymouth looks very nice - if it wasn't so far away it would be the sort of place i'd take a daytrip to

Plymouth definately has an amzing location, rugged yet tranquil. Though i found the mix of poor and rich rather weird as you never really have truely nice areas (council houses next to mansions!). Also the predominance of 60's architecture isnt great either.

This thread pretty much sums up the views of people on the location I live, they don't have one and nor do they care.

There are so many falsities in what Cardiff posted that I cannot be bothered to tackle them.

Oh Zenith

I have a real soft spot for Plymouth despite some of it's shortcomings plus the aquarium is one of my faves

I spent a lot of time in Plymouth as a nipper, I used to really like it.

The best thing is definitely the predominance of 60's architecture.

The "other" Plymouth

Here are a couple of shots I took from the "other" Plymouth -- Plymouth, Massachusetts, to be exact:

Stunning pics Zenith. I love Plymouth; I was lucky enough to go sailing in the sound on a little yacht owned by a mates (blind) uncle a few summers ago. It couldn't have been more beautiful anywhere on earth, it really couldn't.

Plymouth is one of the hidden gems of the UK and considering it was flattened in world war 2 still manages to be one of the most magical places in the UK to spend some time. More pics please!!!!!
