So all of the initial PAL flights between Philippines and Europe are DIRECT FLIGHTS? (no stopover/layover)

And as such the only one with stopover is the MNL<->LHR? (with the help of Ethiad Airlines)

No actual new flights to Europe have been announced yet, so there are no answers to your questions for now. But it's probably a yes to the direct flights question, the A340s and the 777s have the range.

The code share deal with Etihad is made independently from the lifting of the ban, the deal was made before that happened. The Abu Dhabi - London leg is flown by Eithad, as a connecting flight from the PAL Manilla - Abu Dhabi flight. And there's no way Etihad will change this to let PAL also fly to LHR using Etihads slots.

The current problem for Philippine Airlines is that new deals have to be negotiated with all the different European countries. Old traffic right deals where never updated because of the ban, they have to start all over negotiating all new deals. They can only officially announce the new routes when the deals are done. I guess that's why they announced 5 possible routes, just to have several options left if not all will be possible.

Ah I see I see.

Well, I hope PAL does launch direct flights because imho, this provides an advantage since less number of flights = lower costs and more time is saved

Oh and one thing:

Hmmm........

So:
Manila<->Abu Dhabi = PAL
Abu Dhabi<->LHR = Ethiad

If that's the case, then I would just ride with Ethiad all the way.

Manila<->Abu Dhabi = Ethiad
Abu Dhabi<->LHR = Ethiad

Less confusion and this makes it easier for passengers.

Just my opinion

Here's a latest news that will help Philippine carriers wanting to fly to Japan...

The Philippines and Japan have sealed a new air deal after five years, paving the way for a more than three-fold increase in weekly flights between the two countries, Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) executive director Carmelo Arcilla said Friday.
Following a fresh round of talks in Tokyo, flight frequencies for Philippine and Japanese carriers jumped from 119 flights per week to 400 flights per week, or 80,000 seats, between Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Narita International Airport, Japan’s primary air gateway.
I have this idea of mounting a daily (or twice daily) MNL–HND service (HND = Tokyo Haneda) so that passengers who prefer to travel shorter to Tokyo's city center can enjoy the convenience of better accessibility and more frequent services (much cheaper too) that the monorail, Keikyu Trains, taxis, and airport limousine have to offer. I'm still looking at how best to develop the flight schedules for that route, especially if Philippine Airlines will be the one to do it... I want it to provide extensive connections for long-haul flights to and from the US and Europe, as well as the bountiful of domestic services from around Japan.

SMC Enters Aircraft Leasing Business

Quote:
To Support Trans-continental PAL Fleet

18 September 2013

Southeast Asia's largest conglomerate San Miguel Corporation opens an off-shore aircraft-leasing company to support the long haul fleet requirement of Philippine Airlines.

San Miguel Leasing plans to put up in its book an aircraft order for four Boeing 777-300ER, ten 777-900s and ten Airbus A350-900's aircraft from both manufacturers.

SMC President Ramon S. Ang said the Cayman-based company has market capitalization of 1 billion US dollars.

Initial investments of $500 million was put up by SMC while the another $500 will come from the undisclosed buyer of Lucio Tan's 51 percent stake at Philippine Airlines.

SMC admitted earlier that they are in talks with Japan's largest carrier, All Nippon Airways, for a 40% stake. Japanese Company, like Kirin Brewery owns substantial share of SMC shares. The remaining PAL shares is expected to be offered to the stock market.

“We intend to come up with another $500-million equity for the aircraft-leasing company that will be 100-percent owned by PAL,” Ang said during the sidelines of the re-launching of the airline’s flight to Europe.

Meanwhile, Ang said that PAL will lease from Airbus six more A340s over the next five years to cover services to Europe before the new long haul twins from Airbus and Boeing are delivered to them.

PAL will start Manila - London route on November 4 after 15 years of absence. The airline last flew to London Heathrow in 1998.

Not to mention, PAL seems to be on expansion mode yet again, as it will introduce a new service to Japan from Cebu...

Starting 20 December 2014, Philippine Airlines will introduce Cebu-Nagoya service. It will be operated thrice weekly, on board Airbus A321 aircraft. Schedule:

PR480 CEB0910 – 1440NGO 321 236

It comes as the airline will resume service to Osaka from Cebu, which will be operated 4x weekly after a 5-year suspension. Schedule:

PR410 CEB0915 – 1440KIX 321 x236
PR409 KIX1540 – 1930CEB 321 x236

PAL - Plane Always Late says my Filipino friends in our community but I have tried PAL and I'm quite satisfied. Food was ok, service was ok and at the time of my flight the plane was on time. I guess the airport needs to be upgraded because it looks old and lacks modern amenities. I saw on going repairs when I was there so maybe by now it's already done.
