JAKARTA TOWER - 558 m tower to resume construction!
An update from Jakarta ..
The Jakarta Tower ('Menara Jakarta') project will resume construction this year under the name 'Prasada Japa Pamudja'. This project has been put on hold since the 1997 crisis and is now under the Bethany Church management. The tower will host a 'Christian Center', as well as being a center for business, multi media, broadcasting. It will also host a mall, hotel, education office and and an observatory deck. When completed, it will be the TALLEST STRUCTURE IN THE WORLD. The height of the building is 558 m, some 5 metres taller than the CN Tower, the current record holder. Btw, they have conspicuously removed the picture from the website of the old construction company..hehe .. too bad folks, no pics.

It's located in Kemayoran, just opposite to the Jakarta Fair Ground (PRJ) (on the way to Sunter). The vision is to transform the Kemayoran district to become Jakarta's Cybercity and 'International Business District' (Kawasan Bisnis Internasional).
A few mixed-development projects consisting of offices, apartments and buildings (called 'China Business Center') are due to be developed this year by PT Theda Persada Nusantara in partnership with a Chinese investor, as well as the new 'Mega Glodok Kemayoran' electronic shopping center. There was a large 1 page ad yesterday about these exciting new developments on Kompas daily. To summarise the completed and planned developments in Kemayoran: Blok C6 : Jakarta Fair Ground Blok C8: Jakarta Tower Blok B2-B3, C7: 'China Business Center' - mixed use dev. consisting of office buildings and apartments Blok B9: Menara Dapenbum Blok A5: Pelazzo 'Venezia of Kemayoran': Shopping arcade, office and residential (expected completion 2005). Blok B6: MegaGlodok Kemayoran Blok A1: Mediterania Lagoon and Mediterania Palace Apartments (Agung Podomoro Group) Blok D5: Blossom Residence Blok D6: Gandhi International School, Universal School. Btw, the developers just got approval to resume the Jakarta Tower construction last November, so I'm not sure if actual construction has already recommenced, but 'at the time of the stoppage, pile driving had been completed and slip forming of the concrete shaft of the Tower had begun. ' (I quote from http://technopress.kaist.ac.kr/journ...er.jsp?order=1) For more information about the Jakarta Tower project, you can contact PT Prasada Japa Pramudja on (62-21) 65700021/22. |

some pics of the tower!
The Menara Jakarta was intended as a 558m high reinforced concrete and steel tower (provisionally the world's tallest structure) incorporating offices, communication facilities and mast, tourist observation areas and a revolving restaurant. A 240,000sq m podium, incorporating retail facilities and parking surrounds the base. It’s intended location was in Northeast Jakarta, Indonesia. Design work was undertaken jointly by the East China Architectural Design Institute (ECADI) and a local Indonesian consortium (ICC). Compare to other notable towers in the world: can u name them?

I'll try to find out about this from Bethany. I heard Alex has envisioned this tall tower a year ago. Now I heard this plan suddenly on Bethany's hand.
I'm not surprised to see the tower to be constructed. But whose money will finance this huge tower? Throughout his life, Alex keeps on dreaming on projects and so far all of them are realized. The first Bethany church in Surabaya, and then the huge Bethany church which is also in Surabaya. I will be amazed if this tower is constructed! 2 thumbs up for Alex' faith! |

yeah i went to google and searched for 'menara jakarta', and there was a site which turned out to be a bethany newsletter- it confirmed that Alex had been given approval to build this tower last November (btw the site is now missing..) But the recent ad they put in Kompas daily didn't mention anything about the 'Christian center' idea...dunno whether it's cos of local sensitivities, or whether another investor has snatched it from bethany, or the plan was dropped.
I went pass Kemayoran today and so quite a few machines on the site (there were about 5 or 6 of 'em). Pretty unlikely these machines have remained there for 6 years or so idle...thus...v likely that the project is indeed underway.. |

Usually Alex does not have time frame for project completion. On each project he encounters obstacles and keep on insisting for the project until completed.
So, the project can be like stop and go, until it is completed. Wow, I'd like to visit this tower when it is done! And sure it will become another legend for Alex! Alright, folks, I have to edit this post since I found the pictures of Jakarta Revival Center. The name has been changed to Revival Center, which includes the tower itself. Here is the link, you can see Alex giving speech with the miniature of the tower. And not sure if the tower is still 588m? http://www.bethanygraha.org/pubs/gallerymain.asp?id=8 Here is the Graha Bethany in Surabaya, which is completed in the year 2000. I think this man is amazing. This church is huge! http://www.bethanygraha.org/pubs/gallerymain.asp?id=1 Last edited by teddybear; February 14th, 2004 at 07:54 AM. |

Flashback to 1996...
Subject: IN/ECON: IMN - President Approves Jakarta Tower
INDONESIA-P Indonesia Media Network (IMN) - All translations 'as received.' - John 17 Apr 96 President Approves of Jakarta Tower JAKARTA - President Soeharto approves of the plan of conglomerate Sudwikatomono and friends to build the Jakarta Tower, which will be complete with communication facilities and tourism facilities with hundreds of billion rupiahs investment. This approval was expressed by the Head of State on Tuesday, in Bina Graha Jakarta, when he summoned the well known businessman Sudwikatmono who is entrusted with the construction of the tower. Sudwikatmono came with a number of ministers and the Governor of Jakarta, Surjadi Soedirdja. The ministers present were, Tourism, Post, and Telecommunications Minister Joop Ave, Public Works Minister Radinal Mochtar, Informations Minister Harmoko, and Investments Minister Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo. The plans for the Jakarta Tower, which will be constructed on the former Kemayoran Airport, has already been reported to the Secretary of State Moerdiono as the Head of the Kemayoran Organizing Body, last year. The 500 meter Tower which will be built by the private sectors will run an estimated cost of more than Rp 500 billion. The three conglomerates who will finance the construction of the tower, are Sudwikatmono, Prajogo Pangestu, and Hendry Pribadi. While the contractor appointed are from Shanghai, China. However, the plan to build the tower has caused several pro and contra reactions, that the House of Representatives are still questioning whether or not there are more important things to be built nationally, instead of the tower which will cost a tremendous amount of money. After about a year, there was no news of the construction of the tower, yesterday, they met with President Soeharto, however, they limited themselves to the topic of the construction of the tower. In the meeting with President Soeharto yetsterday, Sudwikatmono chose to remain quiet. The spokesperson who reported the result of the meeting with President Soehart was Joop Ave. "The trust to build the tower was given to the private sector, because these days the national private sector has been entrusted with the satelite projects. However, this project is a national project, which means, that the planning to the construction must be done by Indonesians," he said. According to Ave, the involvement of foreigners is perhaps needed as Indonesia is not yet capable, however, it is only limited to , for example, consultants. Sudwikatmono was not ready to explain the details of this project, including the costs, and others as they are still being reviewed. However, the location is the former Kemayoran Airport. THe most important thing, according to Joop Ave, is that the Jakarta Tower is hoped to be a national pride as the Eiffel Tower in Paris. "This tower will be a tourist attraction, and the private sectors appointed are aware of this. In Jakarta, there is the completion of the highest building that is the BNI 46 Jakarta building, which is 46 storeys tall," he said. However, said Joop Ave, height is not the primary issue, it is the function of the tower itself which will be the most complete telecommunication facility and tourist object besides TMII and Ancol. "The Head of State has stressed that the materials used should be produced in Indonesia, make use of all the nation's experts so it will become the pride of our next generation," he said. The presence of the ministers and the Governor according to Joop Ave, is because this project involves the duties fo the officials. It is hoped that Sudwikatmono, who is appointed to build this project, can soon announce the details of the project. |

Kemayoran Cybercity
IT Peaks In Valleys
By Mersagita Prabudi, 1-Jan-2001 The success story of Silicon Valley in boosting the American economy has triggered other countries to emulate the idea. In Asia, this is evident in Singapore, Hong Kong, and in Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor. Indonesia, in turn, will have its own two "Silicon Valleys"-CyberCity, a joint venture with the Japanese, and Bandung High Tech Valley (BHTV), to be built by a team of well-respected Indonesian IT experts. CyberCity will be at the old Kemayoran Airport in Jakarta, about 6 km from the country's Presidential Palace. The project is expected to be completed by 2003. CyberCity appears to be the largest and is intended to be the country's centre for e-commerce, software R&D, telecommunications and multimedia. The project is to be managed by PT Jakarta International Trade Fair Corporation (JITC), a S$14 million (US$8.08 million) joint venture between Indonesia and Japan. The players include Indonesia's PT Griya Nusantara Pratama (GNP), the State Secretariat, the city government of Jakarta, as well as the Japanese government (through the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund) and 57 private sector players from Japan (they include Sumitomo, Toyota, Mitsubishi, and the Industrial Bank of Japan). According to Edward Soeryadjaya, CEO of GNP and chairman of Executive Committee of L&M Group Investments, the project will take up 44 ha of the 450 ha area and will comprise six zones-CyberCity nucleus, light industry, education and training, hotel and residential use, recreation, and entertainment. L&M Group Investments acts as a catalyst for some multimedia projects in CyberCity. Soeryadjaya says the idea of building CyberCity is to put as many IT and business players in one place as possible. "With the right concept and a different approach, we hope this will be a good niche to attract new capital," he adds. In June 2000, L&M signed a strategic alliance agreement with Lucent Technologies. In this agreement, Lucent's Network Care Professional Service (NPS) will design, implement and operate the network, as well as provide network monitoring, support and marketing initiatives for CyberCity. L&M also named Lucent as its primary supplier of communications network infrastructure for its current and coming projects, including the CyberCity initiatives. Interestingly, Indonesia's highly regarded IT experts, such as Onno Purbo, Budi Rahardjo, and Roy Suryo, are not involved in CyberCity. Instead, Budi is leading a team to build BHTV, a corridor along the industrial areas in West Java and Jakarta. BHTV is expected to be ready by 2010. The idea for the project came about a few years ago when Indonesia's Ministry of Trade and Industry collaborated on a study with a consulting firm on boosting income from non-oil and non-gas exports. Results from the study suggested that by 2010, Indonesia must gain US$20 billion from the electronics manufacturing sector. In 1999, the country produced US$3 billion, while the Philippines, for example, already boasts US$26 billion from the sector. Budi, who is considered the pioneer in building Web-based applications in the country, says the reason for choosing Bandung, the capital of West Java, as the place to build BHTV is that highly recognised universities, especially the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), are located there. The city is also the hometown for some IT-related enterprises, including PT Telekomunikasi and Indonesian Science Institute (LIPI). Budi, who is also the head of The Center of Microelectronics Research from ITB, is unperturbed by comments from the industry that BHTV should be in Bali or Batam instead. "We should not dispute about where the project will be based? Even Solo (the capital of Central Java) High Tech Valley seems good to me. But why do we choose Bandung? Because there is already a community (of high-tech universities and IT-related enterprises) there," he says. Despite the separate projects, Suryo, Indonesia's e-provocateur, doubts the two groups of players will head in different directions. "In fact, they will converge as each project becomes mature and then form an integrated e-Indonesia," he says. In Suryo's view, the private sector, or in this case Edward's L&M Group Investment and its partners, should take the lead in the integration. With their existing funding resources, land properties, and technical readiness, they have a responsibility to do so. The team headed by Budi might play the role as builders of the upcoming integrated e-Indonesia, he adds. There certainly are opportunities for synergies. CyberCity will provide an intelligent environment in which IT players can manage their businesses; Bandung can act as the anchor to generate IT human resource for BHTV which will largely depend on the government to regulate foreign investments to fill up the corridor. If both projects are to combine forces, an integrated e-Indonesia will pose a challenge to its Asian counterparts. (see Figure) |
