ok, let's continue with something completely different after all these big cities. As announced on the last page the next city is a obscure little town located in Western Sichuan, where green tea turns to butter tea and confucianism turns to lamaism.

Surrounded from a spectacular landscape, Kangding nestles in a narrow valley at roughly 2500 meters. Actually the city merely consists of two long avenues which stretch along the river.

For Chinese people the city is famous for a lovesong which is dedicated to the city. Some traditional architecture in the background.

Geographically and also in terms of culture the town has a linking function between the Han Chinese dominated fertile lowlands of Eastern Sichuan and the high plains inhabitated by Tibetans. Gonga Shan, the world's highest peak outside the Himalayas (7590m) can be seen from Kangding on clear days.

Nowadays the town has a quite modern outlook, does not look too different from Western towns of similar size. Always bear in mind that this is a remote provincial town of only regional importance.

When climbing down from Tibet's high plains, the first view of Kangding is this: some newly constructed appartments at the city gates.

Btw, the city had nothing to do with the earthquake from 2008, these buildings may not be constructing from the government's subisidies.

The main street.

And another view-

but the main reason for staying in Kangding is its outstanding scenery. Although this is about citys some views of/around Mugue Co lake in the following.

The countryside is inhabitated by Tibetans, whereas a lot of Han Chinese came to Kangding in the previous years

Great to see Nanjing for a change. Looks very cultural. Did you see the 450m tall Greenland Financial Complex?

...Litang!
Litang is located at approx. 4000 meters altidude. It is onew of the world's highest citys. The Tibetan border is just 100 km away

For tourists, Litang serves as a convenient stopover on the southern stretch of the Sichuan - Tibet Highway. 10 years ago, there was not even a dog's hut to sleep for travellers, in recent years some guesthouses have opened their doors. It's still a traditional Buddhist community though, which lives within the city limits

The city has a population of about 7.000 people and conists of two parts: the modern and humble "Han-Chinese" as pictured above and the traditional Tibetan part

I met some tourists there. All were totally exhausted by climbing the rather humble hill where the monastery is located.

The reason behind it: the altitude. They started two days ago in Chengdu at 500m, slept in Kangding 2500 meter and went up to Litang (4000m) just one day later
