Thanks for the comments guys! Don't worry about suggesting your hometown for me to visit, I just might

I will add Genova to the list, I never had a chance to stop there. I have been twice to both Milan and Venice in the last two years so I skip Venice and just drive past Milan on my trip next year.

The last bit of the journey from Istanbul back to Amsterdam is still pretty much undecided. I like going all the way through Romania to Debrecen, and from there to Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna sounds good. Then up to Brno and Wroclaw towards Prague is an option but I will have to skip Krakow because of the distance and shortage of time. But I will be back in Poland for sure so it's alright.

I would plan an alternative for the last 5 - 6 days in case you have a car breakdown. Not all countries have fast road assistance like in the Netherlands/Western Europe.

he should take a car assistance service from his inssurance company. i allways take it just because of travelling abroad (and my inssurance company works in countries where i travel the most by car) i find it very usefull

In the Netherlands, the Dutch motorists association ANWB offers Europe-wide car assistance. Maybe Des is already a member.

My car is still under factory warranty including European wide recovery and repair service, I will check if it covers all countries on my list. When it broke down in Austria earlier this year they sorted everything. And otherwise I'll manage with the travel insurance.

in romania i suggest the E60 route from bucharest to the hungarian border:
giurgiu-bucharest-sinaia(mountain resort with peles royal castle)-brasov(nice medieval center-worth an 1h visit)-sighisoara(very nice medieval town-well preserved, they say it's the last medieval fortress still inhabited) - cluj-napoca(again nice medieval center)-oradea-border.
the road is in good condition, the first 100km being 2+2 an with 70km speed limit inside villages.
if you won't agreed with this route and want to go the one you drafted, would be interesting to visit cozia monastery(20km from ramnicu valcea)and sibiu(european cultural capital in 2007).sibiu won't have its bypass constructed till june 2009 so from your route through the city till historic center it's maybe less than 1km.
both routes through romania are quite crowded as there are no motorways(excepting bucharest-pitesti section).
distances:bucharest-turda through brasov-sighisoara 405km
bucharest-turda through sibiu 408km (calculated now on gps)

You will drive past mainland Portugals highest mountains (2000m), you can exit the A23 in Covilhă and drive to the top.
